Try not to fall too in love with any villains on this season of The Following. After Arthur Strauss (Gregg Henry) appeared to arise the new Bid Bad, he was unceremoniously killed off by his “best student” Theo (Michael Eale). Now with Mark Gray (Sam Underwood) on the run, and Daisy (Ruth Kearney) disappeared, we are left with Strauss’s two remaining proteges, Theo and Duncan (Tim Guinee). Of course we still have Joe Carroll (James Purefoy) awaiting the death penalty. Hopefully there’s an escape in our future.

The aptly named Episode 7, “The Hunt” is on, in multiple ways. Theo and Duncan are hunting down Luis, the guy who makes the passports and thus the only one who can identify them. Close but no cigar behind them are Team Hardy, Ryan and Mike (Kevin Bacon and Shawn Ashmore). After getting out of the hospital, Max (Jessica Stroup) tracks the cyber attacks on the FBI that allowed Strauss to be freed, and winds up at a tech firm where, you guessed it, Theo is working today. The pacing has been frenetic to say the least. This episode alone you had Duncan tracking Luis, Max dealing with Theo, and Team Hardy in constant chase mode.

This episode more than anything served to establish Theo as the new and possibly most sinister villain in The Following‘s three seasons. Eale is so cool and calm. He totally fits the psychotic cyber serial killer as well as the loving family man. His tech skills allow him to play the FBI in circles. There’s a great scene straight out of the ending of Silence of the Lambs where he hits the power and stalks Max in the darkness. And he is evil enough to inspire fear in his associates. Duncan admits at one point, “I’m probably living on borrowed time.”

The good guys are not doing well this season. After breaking past all the suspicion of Mark and company, Ryan is back in an uncomfortable position of needing Joe Carroll’s help. Tensions are flaring between Max’s boyfriend Tom and Mike. And seriously when Ryan is having dreams of hanging out in bars drinking and chumming it up with Joe… you know things aren’t going well. As usual, Joe’s few minutes in the show prove to be the best; his pre-hug quote to Ryan, “You and me against the world!” Ah, best dream sequence ever!

The Following continues its third season, next Monday night at 9:00 EST on Fox.
