ABC Planning ‘Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Spinoff
  |  @   |

Most would agree that the second season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is by far the best so far. Having suffered a narratively flawed first season, season two feels like it is actual building up to something. Ratings have improved all but assuring that season three will be on the way.

With the exciting news, it looks like the network will finally be able to expand their Marvel Television brand with a new spinoff. Hit the jump for more.

Per EW, ABC is now working with Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. producer Jeffrey Bell and writer Paul Zbyszewski on a brand new spinoff. The report doesn’t mention what the show will be about, but given what is going on with S.H.I.E.L.D. now, there are plenty of directions it could go.

Minor spoiler, Edward James Olmos, Adrianne Palicki, and Henry Simmons were introduced as the “real” S.H.I.E.L.D. in season two, dismantling what Agent Coulson has done because they felt that he didn’t have the agency’s best interest at heart. The spinoff could focus on that aspect of the agency, or they could center on new super powered Inhumans that have been appearing throughout the season.

The report adds that there won’t be an “implanted pilot episode” like how The Flash was introduced in Arrow. However, the story elements from AoS will lay the foundation for the spinoff. It is very likely that there will be loose threads connecting to the MCU as well, so there could be a few spoilers in the last episodes that lead up to Avengers: Age of Ultron, which will then lead up to the spinoff show. Of course that is just pure speculation.

EW projects that a pilot episode could premiere as early as this fall, though that also has yet to be confirmed by ABC and/or Disney. There is also a chance that the spinoff could have a midseason premiere the same way Agent Carter premiered last January.
