Disney Also Developing Live-Action ‘Pinocchio’
  |  @   |

It’s been perfectly clear that Disney has been all about turning their classic animated movies into new live-action features, but lately they haven’t been wasting time in announcing what’s next. Just in the past month alone we’ve found out about planned live-action adaptations of Dumbo, Mulan, and Winnie the Pooh, as well as castings for the live-action Beauty and the Beast adaptation. These all follow already-released live-action takes on Alice in Wonderland, Sleeping Beauty (Maleficent), and Cinderella, and other upcoming titles The Jungle Book and sequel Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass.

Now another project is being added to Disney’s live-action slate, an adaptation of their 1940 animated classic Pinocchio. The movie about a wooden puppet wanting to become a real boy was the studio’s second animated feature after 1937’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

The adaptation will be written by Peter Hedges, and will be loosely based on the original Pinocchio tale written by Carlo Collodi in 1883 titled The Adventures Of Pinocchio. Hedges previously wrote the screenplays for What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (as well as the book the movie was based on), About A Boy, Pieces of April, Dan in Real Life, and The Odd Life of Timothy Green, which he also directed.

Much like The Jungle Book, which also has a live-action adaption on the way from Warner Brothers that is being directed by Andy Serkis, this isn’t the only new take on Pinocchio that’s being developed. A darker take on the fairy tale has also been in development from The Devil’s Backbone and Pan’s Labyrinth director Guillermo del Toro since way back in 2008 now, with Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe once said to be interested in starring.

A couple of years back it was reported that Tim Burton wanted to make a live-action Pinocchio with Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr. playing Geppetto. But that’s not likely happening anymore with Burton fittingly now working on the above mentioned live-action Dumbo.
