First, a recap of Syfy’s new Greek mythology series, Olympus, and then a review of Olympus 1.2 “Daedalus.”

Spoiler alert!

Last week we were introduced to this visually striking and very campy tale of Hero (Tom York), a simple guileless young man, on a quest to unlock a mystery inside him. The Lexicon is all powerful and allows one to enter Olympus and attain immortality like the gods themselves! After rescuing the Oracle (Sonya Cassidy) from the scariest and best-made monster I have ever seen, the Cyclops, Hero wants to bring her to the temple she ran away from, so she can answer his origins questions. In the meantime, Medea (Sonita Henry), bleeds out her son with King Aegeus (Graham Shiels), Lykos (Wayne Burns), as she believes the Lexicon is inside him. King Aegeus was injured in a battle with the army of King Minos. Was his brother Pallas (John Emmet Tracy) behind it? Medea puts Lykos in charge, while she keeps her husband abed with “tonics.”

Olympus 1.2 “Daedalus” review: Hero and the Oracle are in a bit of a mess, as he is bled for the Lexicon secrets. This leads to the discovery of the ring’s importance, a ring that Hero has hidden in the south, his home Forest of Troezen. Though Oracle wants him to go towards Athens to meet his father, King Aegeus, Hero refuses. They run into Daedalus (Matt Frewer – Trashcan Man from The Stand), genius inventor, or rather, he crashes nearby with his flying contraption. We meet him right after the death of his son Icarus, as we see a flash of that tragedy during this episode. Medea discovers that Hero, not Lykos has the Lexicon and tries to capture him in various ways. Meanwhile, as the king is being drugged by his wife, Lykos finds he is strategic in the ways of war, and starts taking command successfully. His uncle, Pallas, provides Lykos with a scribe for good and not so good reasons.

Another compelling episode, the treachery between the royal family in Athens is believable and warped. I was glad Lykos defied his mother, and that Medea was thwarted. However, I think I would have drugged King Aegeus too, as he acts like a big jerk sometimes. I adore everything that comes out of Matt Frewer’s mouth and am looking forward to his part in this mystery.

This show does not take itself too seriously. If you click on the images, even the jokey Syfy descriptions are fun.

Olympus airs Thursday nights at 10pm ET on Syfy.

The Cast

Hero’s epic journey leads him through the darkest realms of Ancient Greece accompanied by the beautiful, but twisted Oracle of Gaia, the powerful sorceress Medea and genius inventor Daedalus.

The Setup

Olympus is a fast-paced fantasy/drama set in Ancient Greece. While it takes place in a visually stunning mythological world that defies the realm of imagination, the series is grounded in timeless storytelling, presenting a no-holds-barred adventure into the darker side of human nature, and laying bare our most twisted desires of lust, betrayal, jealousy, greed, ambition, fear, trust”¦and love.

The Magical World Of Olympus

The magical creatures of Greek Mythology are real. They, like Man, are creations of the Gods; dragons designed to guard their treasure, or winged horses to lift them across oceans. But some are also offspring of the Gods themselves…
