The review of Outlander 1.10 “By The Pricking Of My Thumbs” synopsis is coming up, but first, a recap of last week’s episode, Outlander 1.9.

Last week, may have been hard for some feminists to bear. Jaime (Sam Heughan) rescued Claire (Caitriona Balfe) from Black Jack Randall (Tobias Menzies) at literally the point of no return (as far as rape goes). It wasn’t the almost rape that feminists would object to (although bad – yes). It was the spanking – and not the fun kind. Claire had been trying to return to the 1940s after seeing the stones of Craigh na Dun in the distance. She heard Frank (also Tobias Menzies) and he heard her through time, but she got captured. Jaime rescued her at the expense of danger to his men, after she deliberately disobeyed an order. They had a screaming fight, which was resolved, but he had to beat her with a belt on the ass. It was expected in his culture. She froze him out of bed in anger for a while. He loves her so much, he swore a blood oath he would never hurt her like that again. The last scene of that episode was equivalent to soft porn, but they did make up.

Outlander Season 1 Episode 10 “By The Pricking Of My Thumbs” review: What didn’t happen in this episode? There was yet another raunchy sex scene (although not as graphic as last week), some murder, a duel with pistols, a changeling, and exile all squashed into one hour. And that hour was so good, it felt like 15 minutes.

Jaime has hope that the Duke of Sandringham can clear his name and allow him to return to Lollybroch as rightful laird. Claire has a flash of talking to Frank Randall, her 1940s husband and Black Jack Randall lookalike, about the Duke of Sandringham’s (Simon Callow) political proclivities and possible friendship with Black Jack. It seems that he was secretly in support of Dougal’s (Graham McTavish) Jacobite cause. So she goes to speak to him without Jaime knowing. Claire has words with Laoghaire (Nell Hudson). Will the young girl listen or will she turn “hell hath no fury”? You will find out by the end of this episode.

Claire is floored at some of the habits of this primitive (in many ways) people. The clip below between Geillis (Lotte Verbeek) and Claire explains. Watch Jaime prove to Claire once again how he is a man ahead of his time.

Geillis drives much of the action of this episode. She is younger than I pictured. I’m not sure why. I also see that Colum (Gary Lewis) is played more irascible and Dougal less so, but I think I like it.

This show so far has taken its epic material (there is a reason these books have been so popular for decades – the first book was published in 1991), plucked the visual from our imagination, and put it up on the small screen. While there have been small plot changes, or really expansion and minimalization of some scenes, it has only enhanced the show and the story.

Fans of the book, when watching the end of this episode, will know how exciting the next one or two episodes are sure to be as a result. And if you check IMDB‘s episode synopsis one-liners, you know exactly where this season is going, and it’s going to be so good! It looks like the show will not hold anything back.
