James Wan Retires From Horror; WB wants his to direct Aquaman

Last year, WB announced their massive DC film slate. This was a very early look at what the studio would be releasing, as no directors were attached to any of the films. So far Michelle MacLaren has been confirmed to write and direct Wonder Woman. Chris Miller and Phil Lord have just been confirmed to write The Flash, with talks of making an offer to direct as well. But as to who will be directing Green Lantern and Shazam, that is unknown. Now we may have an idea as to who will be directing Aquaman.

Unconfirmed reports are suggesting that WB is eying James Wan as a possibility to direct Aquaman, starring Jason Momoa (check out a first look at the actor in costume here). Hit the jump for more.

This wasn’t unexpected to hear. Talks of Wan possibly directing a DC film for WB circulated when he signed on to direct The Conjuring 2. Because studios like to do in-house hires, keeping Wan inside WB’s circle by directing Aquaman makes sense. The first Conjuring was one of WB’s most successful R-rated summer films of 2013, grossing $318 million worldwide. The director then moved on to the action genre helming one of Universal Pictures’ most successful franchises, Furious 7, which grossed $147 million its opening weekend, the ninth-largest domestic opening of all time.

While Wan may be known for directing horror films, Furious 7‘s success shows that he is capable of doing other genres as well, not to mention how he gracefully handled the film’s production after the tragic death of star Paul Walker.

With Wan currently preparing The Conjuring 2 over at WB, THR is reporting that he is one of the frontrunners to direct Aquaman. Momoa has expressed interest in Zack Synder directing his solo film, but I’m sure Wan’s track record is just enough to convince him that he is just as capable to direct a huge franchise film.

No official offer as been made as of yet, but talks are taking place.

But as long as the offer is not made to Wan, there is a chance that Universal could make an offer to him to direct Fast and Furious 8. Despite Furious 7‘s record-breaking numbers, the studio has yet to officially announce the sequel, which doesn’t have a director. But having already grossed $507.9 million (and counting) worldwide, Universal may want to have Wan direct it.

The Conjuring 2 will shoot this Fall for a June 2016 release, by that time he should already be signed on to direct either Furious 8 or Aquaman, maybe even something else. We still don’t know which one of the two Aquaman scripts WB wants to move forward with, and with the film expected to be released in 2018, you can bet that the studio wants to find someone to work on the movie as soon as possible.
