It was only a few days ago when Warner Bros. and Michelle MacLaren parted ways on Wonder Woman. It was not the first time that a female director left a blockbuster superhero film citing creative differences.

The studio needed to act quickly to find a suitable replacement, and it didn’t take them that long to find one, as a new THR report says that Patty Jenkins has signed on as MacLaren’s replacement. More after the jump.

Warner Bros. needed to find a director to replace MacLaren if they wanted to meet their fall 2015 start date. In fact Jenkins was one of the few names to pop up as a possible replacement. At one point she was attached to direct Thor: The Dark World back in 2011, before she left the project due to creative differences. So there is a little bit of irony to this story. Marvel Studios would eventually choose Alan Taylor has her replacement. Many have expressed their hope that Marvel would turn around and hire MacLaren to hire their upcoming project, Captain Marvel, which would certainly be another interesting twist to the Marvel Studios/DC Comics movies story.

According to the site, hiring Jenkins also “avoids gender bias” that women are unable to helm a superhero blockbuster tentpole. By having her direct Wonder Woman, Jenkins becomes one of the first female directors to helm a major superhero film.

Jenkins is best known for her work directing Monster, starring Charlize Theron, who would win the Oscar for Best Actress. She also directed episodes of Arrested Development, Entourage, and The Killing, which she was nominated for a Primetime Emmy for.

Starring Gal Gadot, Wonder Woman is tentatively scheduled for a June 23, 2017. It’s not yet officially known what the movie will be about, though there is a rumor that it could take place long before the events of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in the 1920s.
