Blade Runner 2 has been in the works for quite some time now, and though not much has been revealed about the sequel, we might finally know who will be starring in the much-anticipated follow-up to Ridley Scott‘s original 1982 movie.
Deadline is reporting that actor Ryan Gosling is in talks to join the upcoming movie in a lead role. If this news happens to be true, Gosling will be starring alongside Blade Runner alum, Harrison Ford, who is confirmed to be reprising his role as Rick Deckard.
Blade Runner 2 is set to be directed by Denis Villeneuve, who has previously directed Prisoners starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal, the French film Incendies, and most recently Sicario starring Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin, and Benecio Del Toro for Black Label Media and Lionsgate.
The screenplay for the sequel is written by Hampton Fancher (The Minus Man, The Mighty Quinn), who co-wrote the original Blade Runner, and Michael Green (Green Lantern, Prometheus 2), based on an idea by Fancher and Scott, who will be a producer on the follow-up.
All that we know about the movie so far is that it will take place decades after the events of the 1982 original. The current plan is to begin filming at some point during the summer of 2016, so there’s still plenty of time left before things start heating up.
Sequels, especially ones produced years after the original’s release, tend to give me mixed feelings. When I first heard about Blade Runner 2, I wanted to be excited, but the original is such a fantastic piece of science fiction movie history, that I didn’t want its value to be tarnished by something different. But with Ford and Gosling attached, this could end up being the sequel I didn’t know I wanted.
