Thrash titans and merchandise machine Slayer has just released the second track from their upcoming and as yet untitled eleventh record. The track is titled “When the Stillness Comes” and will be made available as a 7″ single for this year’s Record Store Day, taking place on Saturday.

Have a listen to the new track here below.

Here’s the details from the official press release:

Slayer will be celebrating Record Store Day this year with a picture-disc seven-inch that contains their new song “When the Stillness Comes” ahead of the band’s new album later this year. The group recorded the song last year in Los Angeles with producer Terry Date.

The single’s A-side features the image of a blood-stained skull with the band’s name carved into it, while the flipside sports an inverted cross and a live version of their song “Black Magic” – originally released on their 1983 debut, Show No Mercy – that they recorded at Germany’s Wacken festival last year. The single is limited to 5,000 copies and will be available only at the participating stores listed on the Record Store Day website on April 18th.

Slayer last released a new song a year ago, when they premiered “Implode” at the Golden Gods Awards and subsequently put it out as a free download on their website. It was the first new song the group had issued since the death of founding guitarist Jeff Hanneman, who died in 2013 of liver failure. Exodus guitarist Gary Holt has been filling in for Hanneman, and the band also now features returning drummer Paul Bostaph.

Unfortunately, the new track is only slightly less boring than “Implode.” It starts off with a heavy and creepy riff and some odd spoken word stuff from vocalist/bassist Tom Araya and then proceeds to not really go anywhere. The whole song sort of feels like one long intro that never really leads anywhere. I’m reserving full judgment until we are able to hear the new record in its entirety, but if these two tracks are any indication, the loss of Jeff Hanneman may just be too big of a blow for the band to ever recover from. I have been a Slayer fan for 32 years and I sincerely hope that this is not the case.

Anyway, here is the official stream of “When the Stillness Comes.” Check it out and judge for yourself.
