The brothers are back! But before we get to the review for Supernatural episode 10.18 “Book Of The Damned,” let’s hop into the Impala and drive back to 2 weeks ago for a recap of episode 10.17 “Inside Man.”

IGIT! Bobby Singer (Jim Beaver) is on the case! With the Mark of Cain still in charge of of Dean’s fate, Castiel (Misha Collins) and Sam need Metatron (Curtis Armstrong), but he resides in heavenly Rikers. Through a medium, they contact Bobby who lives in his own heaven (looks pretty lonely to me). Bobby has a purpose now, and jumps right in. The part where Bobby releases all the “Robert Singers” (and one Roberta!) in heaven to throw the angel police off his tail, is perfect. Bobby is definitely in big trouble though.

Castiel steals Metatron’s grace and makes him human to force him to take him to his own grace, after Metatron admitted he actually does not know how to get rid of the Mark.

Dean gets attacked by humans under Rowena’s (Ruth Connell) control, but he comes out perfectly fine, even when she does a spell that should kill him. The Mark protected him. Afterward, Dean and Crowley (Mark Sheppard) have a drink together, where Dean finds out the Mark is a curse, and Crowley realizes it’s time to kick mommy to the curb.

Supernatural 10.18 “Book Of The Damned” review: Yay Charlie! Felicia Day is a guest this episode and what do you think she dug up? I’ll give you a hint. It’s “groovy.” But don’t worry. No one is cutting off their own hands. At least not yet. But this does make her a shooting target, and the shooting is on the mark. So she calls in her “bitches,” to come meet her.

It’s a road trip for Castiel and Metatron, which actually rivals Sam and Dean’s many many road trips on the fun-for-the-audience level.

Metatron (on the glory of food): “Goes in here.” Points to mouth. “Comes out here.” Points to… you know. “Sorcery!”

To the surprise of no one, Metratron tricks Castiel, grabs the demon tablet and escapes.

As we all know now, Sam pretended to burn the Book and brought it to Rowena to make a deal. He really thinks the answer is in there, and he is willing to sacrifice anything to save his brother.

Some thoughts?

– Finally, after two decades, Alanis Morrisette’s “Ironic” is called out for its title on a tv show.

– Dean rocks out to “The Boys Are Back In Town” this episode. Love that! Actually, music seems extra important this episode with a song at the end emphasizing the contrasting moods of the brothers.

– Metatron to Castiel: “Can’t we be besties?” Have I mentioned I really enjoy human Metatron?

– Charlie acts equally as awesome when she meets Castiel. It’s great to have him back as an angel, even though he is still an outcast.

– Dean and Sam agreeing that Crowley has gone soft is fantastic. It’s why we love Mark Sheppard.

Look. I know this is a recycled Supernatural theme and that the brothers have been down this “road so far” many times before. I could probably write the next script myself. They have 10 seasons in the bank; renewed for an 11th. The formula works. And I’m sure they never would have thought the show would last this long. Every season renewed is gravy.

Supernatural airs Wednesday nights at 9pm ET on The CW.
