The Comedians
Season 1 Episode 2 “Come To The House”
Directed by Larry Charles
Written by Ben Wexler
Starring Billy Crystal, Josh Gad, Megan Ferguson, Larry Charles, Stephnie Weir, Steven Weber
FX
Air Date: Thursday, April 16th, 2015 10pm

Last week FX debuted The Comedians a documentary style comedy about the making of a new comedy sketch show: “The Billy & Josh Show” starring Billy Crystal and Josh Gad. Only problem”¦ the stars cannot stand one another.

The second episode of the show, titled “Come to the House,” demonstrates how the two stars’ combative personalities are affecting those around them. Director Jamie (Steven Weber as a woman) seems to be struggling, while the head writer Mitch (Matt Oberg) can’t seem to get Esme (Megan Ferguson), the assistant, to understand her role”¦ as an assistant. When he suggests a coffee run, she responds, “YES, I’ll take a dirty chai!” Obviously she’s never seen The Devil Wears Prada.

Josh is invited to Billy’s home by Julie Crystal, whom Josh was just mocking for her obnoxious coffee orders. Josh’s big concern is what to give as a gift, and the best interactions of the episode come when he seeks suggestions from Kristen (Stephnie Weir). One of her suggestions, an ADT security system, inspires a hilarious response. Gad shows up to the house during a LA Clippers playoff game (Crystal is regularly seen at the games) and messes with the routine of Billy and “the guys,” easily recognized athletes.

Here’s the thing with The Comedians: the humor is very dry, and the dialogue between the leads is at times so absurd, it borders on unbelievable, as in not believable. Normally that would be a strange critique, but the show is grounded in reality. The brilliance of real-life comedy like Seinfeld or Curb Your Enthusiasm is that no matter how ridiculous the scenarios were, you always felt that those situations could ACTUALLY happen. The Comedians has everything in place to become a great comedy series; the stars, the pedigree, and the setting. In both of the first two episodes, I went periods of 5+ minutes without a chuckle, before literally laughing out loud. I like the leads. I like the potential and that will keep me sticking around.

The Comedians airs on Thursday nights at 10:00pm ET on FX.
