Each episode of Bates Motel builds momentum to an expected crescendo finish. Before we review the 7th episode of this buildup, let’s recap what happened last week.
Norma (Vera Farmiga) flipped out when Dylan (Max Thieriot) told her Caleb (Kenny Johnson) had been staying with him at the farm. Norman (Freddie Highmore) stood by his brother in a rare choosing of sides. That levelheadeness did not last long when Norma packed a suitcase and left, crashing her car, buying some “come get me” clothes, and checking into a (different) motel. This triggered a giant Norman episode, complete with his “Norma” personality mothering Dylan. Emma (Olivia Cooke) stayed to help, and she and Dylan had a moment (over phlegm). Norma slept with her therapist/lover then ran back home.
Romero (Nestor Carbonell) was shot, then later visited by the man gunning for his job, Marcus Young (not the shooter). He infuriated him so much, Romero killed him.
The episode ended in a hug – Norma and Caleb’s. Norman was NOT happy.
Bates Motel 3.7 “The Last Supper” review: Dylan talks to Emma’s dad who reveals her only shot of not dying is a $25,000 donation to get her to the top of a transplant list. Dylan may have found the answer when his dad turns down Chick’s (Ryan Hurst) job of gunning guns. Caleb says absolutely not to Dylan doing it, but since he hasn’t been around to be a dad, so Dylan may not listen.
Romero send a corpse gift to Bob Paris, then realizes his dead mother’s name is on that drive. Now he’s really confused.
Norma’s therapist/lover passes by, and goes to the basement to question him. Norman kept asking him for sex details about his mother, then tried to kill him when he turned the tables.
Norma has a real family dinner, Caleb included, and seems really happy and at peace for the briefest of moments. They play piano and make toasts – it’s really nice.
Just when you think the relationship between Norman and Norma could not get any creepier, that last sleeping Norma scene shows up to top it.
So I figure the title of the episode was meant to guide our thinking in this direction, but it really does feel like the end. This has to be a setup for a big death. It could be anybody really, except Norman.
Last week I declared “Norma Louise” to be my favorite episode of the season. This episode was on par with that one.

Bates Motel: Dylan and Emma Have a Connection (S3, E6)
When Norman acts oddly, it gives Dylan and Emma an opportunity to bond in this scene from “Norma Louise.”
Norma’s family meal is definitely the calm before the storm because you know all hell is going to break out soon. So who’s going to die? I expect it’ll be Caleb at the hands of Norman (or his blacked out Norman/Norma personality). The therapist is also probably a goner unless he’s smart enough to know he needs to stay as far away from that family as possible. And there is definitely chemistry brewing between Dylan and Emma beyond Dylan just wanting to help her get a lung transplant. This will undoubtedly be another factor in the tipping point of Norman’s sanity (or what’s left of it). I can’t imagine they will kill off Dylan (I sure hope they don’t) but maybe he’ll get busted doing the gun run and end up in jail for a while, which actually might save him from Norman’s rampage. And if Dylan and Emma get closer Norman will undoubtedly be skulking around in the shadows and see or hear it, which may make Emma vulnerable as well. All this talk of her premature death may be some foreshadowing, perhaps? After all, we know the Norman/Norma Psycho personality does not like slutty girls (Not that Emma is a slut, but Norman may feel different if she goes for his brother). It’s a great show that continues to be one of my favorites every week. Can’t wait to see what happens even though we’re probably going to lose a character or two we all like.
