‘Black Mass’ Trailer: Johnny Depp Delivers A Cold and Terrifying Performance
  |  @   |

The first image of Johnny Depp as Whitey Bulger in Scott Cooper‘s (Crazy Heart) Black Mass was unveiled yesterday, and now we are getting a first look at the footage from the film in an all-new trailer.

The film will center on Bulger’s life as a Bostonian gangster while acting as an FBI informant. In the new trailer we see a huge departure from the roles we are accustomed to seeing from Depp in recent years. No more silly pirate play or childish gestures, this is a Depp that needs to be seen more often. Hit the jump to check out the first trailer for Black Mass.

The trailer isn’t much of a montage of scenes compiled together; instead, it focuses on one particular performance during dinner where Bulger has to lecture corrupt FBI agent John Morris (David Harbour) about not even giving away secrets, even if they are as insignificant as a simple family recipe. Scenes of Bulger’s crimes are spliced into the dialogue to give us an idea of who the criminal is, but Depp’s performance is just so cold and powerful, it should already be leaving you with chills from the moment he speaks. The trailer even gives us tease of the brazen parking lot murder that was mentioned in yesterday’s report.

A lot of people who knew Bulger closely were on set, and during production Depp’s performance was so close to the gangster that they could not even look at the actor.

Joel Edgerton, Benedict Cumberbatch, Kevin Bacon, Dakota Johnson, Peter Sarsgaard, Jesse Plemons, Corey Stoll, Rory Cochrane, Sienna Miller, and Adam Scott also star.

Written by Mark Mallouk and Jez Butterworth, Warner Bros. will release Black Mass into theaters on September 18, 2015.

In 1970s South Boston, FBI Agent John Connolly (Joel Edgerton) persuades Irish mobster James “Whitey” Bulger (Johnny Depp) to collaborate with the FBI and eliminate a common enemy: the Italian mob. The drama tells the true story of this unholy alliance, which spiraled out of control, allowing Whitey to evade law enforcement, consolidate power, and become one of the most ruthless and powerful gangsters in Boston history.
