A comedic animated Spider-Man film was first revealed after Sony’s private e-mails were leaked last year. These e-mails revealed that Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The LEGO Movie, 21 and 22 Jump Street) would be involved in a creative capacity.

It would be months before an actual confirmation could be made, with the two playing coy during every interview opportunity. Sony is announcing that an Untitled Spider-Man animated film is in the works. Hit the jump for more.

Variety was in Las Vegas at CinemaCon when the Sony Pictures CEO Tom Rothman made the official announcement.

Lord and Miller will write the treatment and produce the animated Spider-Man movie, but no word if they will be offered the chance to direct. They are also going to write The Flash and Ghostbusters, that reportedly will star Chris Pratt and Channing Tatum. Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach, and Amy Pascal are also serving as producers.

Bringing these two on board in any capacity could only help the film they are working on. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, both 21 and 22 Jump Street, and The LEGO Movie were considered bad ideas, but all of them ended up being a critical and commercial success. The two also have the Fox hit show Last Man On Earth under their belts.

Rothman says that the animated film will “co-exist” with the new live-action Spider-Man. Though the press release obtained by /Film says “the film will exist independently of the projects in the live-action Spider-Man universe, all of which are continuing.” Though Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige is on board as producer for the live-action films, it’s unlikely he will be involved in the animated version. Rothman would also not reveal any details on the live-action Spider-Man.

While there will be two Spider-Man properties sharing the same space, it only makes sense if the tone and themes are different from each other. Maybe it will even mirror how there is a live-action Batman in the DC Cinematic Universe while there is a LEGO Batman that is getting its own spinoff. Whatever the case, if anyone can figure out how to make it work, it’s Phil Lord and Chris Miller.

Spider-Man is rumored to make his first appearance in the MCU in Captain America: Civil War, which opens in theaters on May 6, 2016. The Webslinger’s solo debut, the tentatively titled The Spectacular Spider-Man, is scheduled for a July 28, 2017 release. Rothman did not reveal a release date for the animated Spider-Man film.
