‘The Elder Scrolls Online’ On PS4 and Xbox One Will Be 65GB

The console version of The Elder Scrolls Online (which was released on PC in April of last year), titled The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited, is only a couple of short months away from release. And now that fans of Bethesda’s series know they don’t have to worry about a monthly subscription fee, excitement has no doubt increased quite a bit.

But there are still some things you’ll have to accept and work around if you plan to play on PS4 or Xbox One instead of PC. One such thing is the fact that, in announcing that a limited full-access public beta for the game is beginning tomorrow, ZeniMax Online Studios also revealed that the game will take up a whopping 65GB of hard drive space to run.

You can read more about the game’s massive size and check out some images below.

If you’ve paid any attention to the game at all over the past handful of years, you know it’s big. Really big. It’s a game that lets you join up with your fellow Elder Scrolls-loving friends and visit the many locations of Tamriel—some of which were the setting of previous games in the series, each huge in its own right—for some adventuring. So it shouldn’t come as too much of a shock that it’s a 65GB heavyweight.

If you do some quick video game math, you’ll realize that that’s 15GB more than what’s available on the Blu-ray disc that current-gen console games use. The developer packed as much on the disc as they could, and then an additional 15GB or so download will be required when you start playing.

Despite the massive size, most would agree that it’s a lot better than having to deal with multiple discs (please insert Disc 2 and press start!). And when you’re done playing it or if you’re desperate for space you can always remove it and re-install later if you come back to it. Still, when you’re using an Xbox One that immediately steals around 130GB just for its own operating system and you add a 65GB game, that alone sure starts to make that 500GB of total space look smaller than anticipated this early into the “next-generation” of gaming consoles.

If you’re interested in learning more about the limited public beta mentioned above, you can read all about it over at the Elder Scrolls Online website. Unfortunately they’re not longer accepting invite requests, though they do encourage anyone taking part to stream their experience and share thoughts and screenshots and such, so be on the lookout for that if you’re interested in seeing whether the game looks worth your coin or not.

The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited will be released for consoles on June 9th, and can be pre-ordered on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 now.
