Tyler Perry is the latest addition made to the cast of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2. A new report says that the actor has signed on to play Baxter Stockman, a nefarious scientist who often works for Shredder and his dreaded Foot Clan.
Perry joins Megan Fox and Will Arnett, who will reprise their respective roles in the sequel, and Arrow star Stephen Amell, who was recently cast as masked vigilante Casey Jones. Other actors reprising their roles in the first movie have not been confirmed. Hit the jump for more.
Variety was the first to report on the news. They also confirm that David Green (Earth to Echo) is on board to direct the film. Paramount’s Panel at CinemaCon in Las Vegas also confirmed that Bebop and Rocksteady will be appearing.
Though there were various incarnations of the character throughout different franchises, Stockman is best known to be the evil scientist who provided Shredder with his mouser robots to try to capture the Turtle’s teacher, Master Splinter. Originally portrayed as an African American scientist in the Mirage Comics, the character was introduced as a Caucasian in the 1987 animated series. During the series run, he was also turned into a human fly. In the 2003 reboot, Stockman returned to his original ethnicity, where a series of failures resulted in bodily mutilation.
Since Shredder’s mutated henchman, Bebop and Rocksteady, are confirmed for the sequel, having Baxter Stockman in it may somehow tie into that.
Screenwriters Josh Applebaum and Andre Nemec will return to pen the script, as well as executive produce.
Production is scheduled to start next month.
Though it was panned by critics, Jonathan Liebesman’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles grossed $485 million worldwide.
Perry is best known for his role as Madea in numerous Madea-related films. He also wrote and directed many other films under his Tyler Perry Studios banner. The actor also had roles in Alex Cross, Star Trek, and was most recently seen in David Fincher’s Gone Girl, alongside Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 is scheduled for a June 3, 2016 release.
