Directed by Jeff Burr (Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III), From a Whisper to a Scream – also known as The Offspring – is a low-budget 1987 horror anthology film starring Vincent Price and Clu Gulager.

On the night his niece is executed for committing a string of murders, historian Julian White (Price) reveals the sinister secrets of her hometown, Oldfield, Tennessee. White regales a local reporter (Susan Tyrrell) with four chilling tales that expose the town’s horrific legacy.

The first segment stars Gulager as Stanley Burnside, an awkward middle-aged man who attempts to date his beautiful younger boss (Megan McFarland) with disastrous results. Gulager is the highlight of this film, delivering a chilling performance as a man who lives alone with his invalid sister who he may or may not have an incestuous relationship with.

Set in the 1950s, segment two follows a man (Terry Kiser) on the run from gangsters, who encounters a voodoo priest (Harry Ceasar) with life-prolonging powers. Kiser’s character is a real asshole – a selfish, uncaring prick whose wicked ways finally catch up with him.

White’s third spine-tingling story involves a girl (Martine Beswick) who falls in love with a glass-eating freak show performer (Ron Brooks), much to the displeasure of the carnival’s oppressive Snakewoman (Rosalind Cash). This segment, set in the ’30s, is a love letter to Tod Browning’s Freaks – it even features Angelo Rossitto, who starred in Browning’s 1932 film.

The fourth and final story is perhaps the most macabre. Set during the Civil War, this segment finds Union Sgt. Gallen (Cameron Mitchell) and his men encountering a group of deformed and crippled children living alone in the woods. They appear to be sickly orphans, but nothing is what it seems.

When it comes to ’80s horror anthologies, From a Whisper to a Scream is a hidden gem. It’s every bit as entertaining as George A. Romero’s Creepshow (1982) and features some great performances from Price, Gulager, and Mitchell. Burr’s debut film is extremely low budget, but it’s a spirited work from someone who obviously loves the genre.

Now available on Blu-ray from Scream Factory, From a Whisper to a Scream is a ballsy, blood-soaked spookshow that deserves a look from hardcore horror fans. This release features an impressive 1080p 1.85:1 transfer, a loud and clear English 2.0 DTS-HD MA Stereo audio track, two feature-length documentaries, and much more. 1. I hope the trailer isn’t any indication of the quality of the Blu-ray, since there is poor image quality throughout, as well as visible fields.

Also, saw Clu, Courtney, and I assume Frazier today at lunch going on about this as though it was some kind of masterpiece…

    LMFAO

  2. I think it’s a pretty good little movie. They ought to be proud. It’s also an older, low budget movie, yeah the image quality is probably not going to be amazing. But I like my sleazy movies to still look sleazy, who wants them too cleaned up?
