When Sony made the deal to share Spider-Man with Marvel many had hoped that he would be added to a post or mid-credit scene in Avengers: Age of Ultron. It may have been a possibility considering director Joss Whedon famously shot a post-credit scene on the film’s press day. But the deal said that he would make his first MCU appearance next year, possibly in Captain America: Civil War. The film’s release also confirmed that there wasn’t an extra scene after the credits, and that Spider-Man wasn’t in it.

However, Whedon really wanted to have the Webslinger in Avengers: Age of Ultron, and also wanted to have Captain Marvel in it too. See what he had to say below.

Here’s Whedon talking about having the two characters appear in the film in an interview with Empire Film Podcast:

That first part of the statement is interesting because that would mean Sony would have initiated talks with Marvel and Disney much earlier than we thought. The script actually called for Captain Marvel to be in the film, however Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige said it would have been a “disservice” to have her in for such a short amount of time and no proper introduction. And that’s fair, but one could argue that a small appearance in the film could bridge the gap that would eventually lead to her solo film. However, on the flip side, that same script would have had her fully formed and not just as a non-powered human.

As for Spider-Man, timing was certainly an issue. By the time the deal was made, Age of Ultron had already finished shooting, and there was no time to get the cast back together for any additional reshoots.

While Whedon did a commendable job juggling all of the characters’ screentime, Age of Ultron would have only suffered with the addition of two more. There was also supposed to be a subplot with Loki, which ultimately ended up being cut out of the film. But we will get to see him in Captain America: Civil War, a solo film due out in 2017, and Avenger: Infinity War Part I and II. Let’s not forget any other possible cameo scenes, either. We’re just going to have to be a bit more patient.
