A recap of last week’s episode of The Returned, before we start our review.

The focus was “Claire” as we got more of her backstory. After all these weeks of thinking Jack (Mark Pellegrino) was the bad spouse, we found out that Claire (Tandi Wright) and Peter (Jeremy Sisto) had been together a year before Camille’s (India Ennenga) death. Lena (Sophie Lowe) comes home and only tells Tony’s (Aaron Douglas) part in her disappearance. He confesses, and is immediately doomed. Julie (Sandrine Holt) brought Victor (Dylan Kingwell) with her to the station. Victor thinks that Tony hurt her, so he makes Tony hallucinate his mother. Tony smashes his own head against the table until he dies. The twins reconcile and Lena’s wound is healing. Rowan (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) stretches the events to make it look like Simon (Mat Vairo) was extra dangerous (maybe he was, who knows), so Tommy (Kevin Alejandro) wouldn’t get in trouble for killing him. We know that’s not going to happen anyway because…

Simon kicked himself out of his morgue drawer, resurrected!

The Returned 1.9 “Helen” review: Helen (Michelle Forbes) is batshit crazy, and was that way before she died. We saw her past 29 years ago, right after Victor/Henry was murdered. The dam broke and the black water came rushing at her. I think she might be trying to repeat history this episode. She’s already proven she’s willing to kill for it.

Simon went to Peter for help, but he only gave him a van and some money. Simon picked up Chloe and drove away. Now Rowan is out of her mind, with good reason. I feel so bad for him. He’s not even trying to wreak revenge for Tommy killing him the second time. He just wants to be with his daughter.

The bus crash memorial is happening at the center. Camille shows up demanding Peter’s help. I get his connection to Victor. I do not get why the other returned are drawn to him. That is, until he says it at the end of the episode.

Lucy (Leah Gibson) is hearing voices again…

With the exception of Victor and Helen, it seems to me that the living are behaving worse than the returned. I really want to know what the heck is going on? This show is so compelling. I’m riveted to every episode. And I do NOT know what is going on most of the time. The buildup is excruciating. I hope the payoff is big.

The French version, Les Revenants, was greenlit for a second season years after the first season ended, despite much critical acclaim. Could the buzz from our American version be the reason? I’m looking forward to checking that out as well.

The Returned season finale airs Monday, May 10th at 10pm ET on A&E.
