Minority Report: Stark Sands

Steven Spielberg is probably the greatest cinematic director of the last 40 years, a two-time Oscar winner for Best Director, and creator of some of most memorable films in history including JAWS, Jurassic Park, Schindler’s List, and E.T. So it’s understandable and almost excusable when one of his best films lived in relative anonymity for years… until now.

The film is 2002’s Minority Report. Tom Cruise starred as Detective John Anderton of the futuristic pre-crime division. Using three “pre-cogs” (children born with the ability to see murders before they take place) they have virtually wiped out violent crime. Of course that’s until a conspiracy unfolds to frame Anderton and leads to the end of pre-crime. The film, based on a story by sci-fi genius Philip K. Dick (did he write EVERY sci-fi story!?!?) is action packed and features amazing special effects but also is poignant and asks serious questions. The acting is also great — it’s Cruise at his best — and featured an Oscar-worthy supporting performance from Samantha Morton. Now, executive producer/writer Max Borenstein and director Mark Mylod are bringing Minority Report as a series to Fox and hopefully re-igniting interest in the under-appreciated classic film.

Check out the first trailer and inside look video here below.

Borenstein and executive producer Kevin Falls detail the plot and joke about having the first adaptation of Spielberg movie to TV (“No pressure”). The show will take place ten-years after the film in 2065 and the main character is Dash (Stark Sands), one of the pre-cogs dealing with life after pre-crime. Still dealing with issue of seeing murders before they happen, Dash struggles with trying to save lives and stay out of the picture. As Mylod points out, this will hopefully add some levity to the serious tone of the film. Dash comes into contact with a police officer played by the beautiful Meagan Good, and I get the feeling there’s going to a fairly humorous buddy cop story between them. The futuristic sets look awesome, a combo of the 2002 film with exteriors from The Capital in The Hunger Games. And the talking advertisements will definitely provide some entertainment.

In the trailer, we reflect on the main story of the film through narration from Dash, one of the Pre-Cogs who used to help stop crimes before they happened. Now years later, he copes with still seeing parts of murders but can’t do anything to stop them. Until he meets Detective Laura Vega who secretly helps him tap his pre-cog potential and reopen the abandoned pre-crime division. Stark Sands and Meagan Good star along with a cast that includes That 70s Show‘s Wilmer Valderrama, Laura Regan, and Li Jun Li. Minority Report is coming soon to the Fox network.
