Swords of Sorrow #1 is many things: a really fun story, even though it’s not supposed to be; a great comic to look at. But, beyond that, this book is special because it stars an all-female cast of heroes. As a man, I almost didn’t want to review this, but then I thought “It doesn’t matter if the book stars women, the only thing that matters is if it’s good or not.” So, is it? Let’s find out…

Writer Gail Simone is no stranger to writing all-female books. That being said, she was the perfect choice to write this. The thing that surprised me the most, is that even though the book has a serious tone, I couldn’t help but smiling while reading it because it was SO MUCH fun! It’s so great to see all of these heroines in the same book, and Simone’s story bring the characters together in a logical and smart way. She really captures all of their personalities, dead on. This issue was a really fun read.

Artist Sergio Davila is the cherry on the sundae of this book. His art is gorgeous! It’s easy for artists to go over the top when drawing female characters, but you won’t find that here. His page layouts are fantastic, the overall look of the book is fantastic, and even though all the heroines come from different worlds, he both accurately portrays those worlds, yet makes them look like they belong in the same universe.

If you’re looking for an ass-kicking female heroes comic, this is it. Even if you’re not, you should really pick this book up. It’s fantastic! Besides the things that I specifically talked about, this comic is both satisfying and fun. A rare treat.
