Alex Garland Has Come Up With Ideas For ’28 Months Later’
  |  @   |

Ex Machina director Alex Garland has very few titles attached to his name, but is considered one of the best screenplay writers in the business. Most of his works are original, but he did work on both 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later, as a screenwriter for the former and an executive producer for the latter. Of course with the kind of following that the 28 films have produced, fans have been wondering when there would be 28 Months Later.

Now Garland kind of has an answer for that. In an interview, the screenwriter confirms that he has a story idea for the sequel, but adds that he won’t direct or produce. More on this below.

Speaking to The Playlist, Garland talked about some of the issues he has with coming up with ideas for a sequel:

“Sequels are generally done in a rush. It’s done with a sense of urgency. The first movie, you spend a long time developing to get it over the line. The second thing, you don’t. Your expectations are different and your motivations are different.”

This would explain why Garland was only an executive producer on 28 Weeks Later. But Garland is unsure as to why there wasn’t a follow-up:

“After the second one, none of us really wanted to do another. Fox may or may not have, I don’t know.”

But during the process, Garland talks about what motivated him to write a concept for 28 Months Later:

“About two years ago, Danny started collaborating on the potential to make “˜Trainspotting 2,’ another sequel. In that conversation, an idea for ’28 Months’ arrived. I had a sort of weird idea that popped into my head. Partly because of a trip I’d taken. I had this thought, and I suggested it to Andrew and Danny, but I also said I don’t want to work on it. I don’t really want to play a role, and Andrew said, ‘Leave it to me.’ So he’s gone off and is working on it.”

We can’t be entirely sure if or when exactly we might see a 28 Months Later. Again, while there is a following, studios and creative teams don’t seem to be in a rush to finish out the trilogy. That being said, at least it is being addresses in some capacity.
