In Tom Kyzivat‘s The Revival, a small band of heroes trying to survive amidst a ravaged wasteland are led by a woman named Red. Their self-proclaimed mission is to stop the megalomaniac, Ego — leader of the Engine — from further enhancing his reign. Surrounded by the Engine’s clone army — the Cabbage Heads — and avoiding the twisted, experimentations known as Holos, Red and her crew are in search of anything or anyone that might be able to aid them in their task.

Post-apocalyptic stories are best when inhabited by relatable, fallible, and layered characters, as well as a lavish backstory. This is certainly the case with Kyzivat’s The Revival. I’ve enjoyed every issue thus far, as they each provide all of the above criteria. The history of the world is divulged in pieces with each issue; characters reveal their personal journeys; and one character in particular, the rambunctious Rainbow, breaks the fourth wall in amusing and well placed fashion in every new comic.

Kyzivat’s illustrations are just as important to The Revival as his story. The characters are all drawn with a ragged, gritty feel; the colors used are perfectly drab, allowing the true feel of a dying world to bleed through the pages.

Revival is an excellent edition to the post-apocalyptic genre. It’s a series that branches off of its sub-genre tropes, while at the same time, has no qualms with poking fun at itself. If you haven’t checked out this comic yet, what are you waiting for?
