‘Jem and The Holograms’ Trailer: Insert “Truly Outrageous” Reference Here

If you were a fan of the ’80s animated TV series Jem and the Holograms, you were probably super excited to see the upcoming live-action movie based on it. I say “were” because you’re about to not be anymore. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Universal Pictures has released the first trailer for the movie, and it’s…well, it’s not going so hot. Response to the trailer has been overwhelmingly negative, largely thanks to the movie based on a show about a music company owner who leads a secret second life as the lead singer of a popular band with the help of holographic technology apparently not having a music company owner who leads a secret second life as the lead singer of a popular band with the help of holographic technology in it. It looks more like a modern-day remake of That Thing You Do! than anything, but not nearly as awesome.

You can read more about Jem and the Holograms and see the trailer for yourself below.

I can’t say I’m familiar with Jem myself, and so I can’t judge the movie based on the trailer alone. But judging by the comments on Universal Pictures Australia’s upload of the trailer on YouTube seen below, which has been viewed around 83,111 times at the writing of this post, fans are not at all happy. It has only 200 thumbs up, and 1,080 thumbs down. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen such a ratio, and this is YouTube, where even the best, most touching, entertaining, and funniest videos get thumbs down from some of the most lifeless trolls in existence.

As a small-town girl catapults from underground video sensation to global superstar, she and her three sisters begin a one-in-a-million journey of discovering that some talents are too special to keep hidden. In Universal Pictures’ JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS, four aspiring musicians will take the world by storm when they see that the key to creating your own destiny lies in finding your own voice.

Directed by Jon M. Chu (Step Up series, G.I. Joe: Retaliation), the musical adventure stars Aubrey Peeples, Stefanie Scott, Aurora Perrineau, Hayley Kiyoko, Ryan Guzman, Molly Ringwald and Juliette Lewis. JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS, based on the iconic Hasbro animated TV series, is written by Ryan Landels and produced by Chu, Jason Blum for Blumhouse Productions, Scooter Braun for SB Projects, Bennett Schneir, and Brian Goldner and Stephen Davis of Hasbro Studios.

Jem and the Holograms is set to be released on October 23, 2015.
