Marvel Wants ‘Selma’ Director Ava DuVernay For ‘Black Panther’ or ‘Captain Marvel’
  |  @   |

Despite some behind-the-scenes tensions — Edgar Wright and Patty Jenkins immediately come to mind, while Joss Whedon isn’t shy about some of the troubles he has had — Marvel manages to find the right person to direct their films. Now, the studio is setting their sights on the director of the Oscar-nominated Selma. According to a report from The Wrap, Selma director Ava DuVernay is being courted to direct a Marvel film. We just don’t know which one yet. For more on this story below.

The site says that Marvel wants her for a “diverse movie,” and of course Black Panther and Captain Marvel is as diverse as it gets. Both films hit 2018, with Black Panther opening July 6, while Captain Marvel opens on November 2. Marvel is also considering other directors just in case things don’t go their way, but it should be noted that “there is mutual interest in having her join the MCU.”

Should DuVernay sign on, she would be the first female director to helm a Marvel studio film, not to mention that she is also a woman of color. As to why it may have taken so long for the studio to make such a hire, well the news comes after “American Civil Liberties Union asked state and federal agencies to investigate Hollywood’s hiring practices at major studios, networks and talent agencies.”

Currently, Chadwick Boseman is the only one confirmed to appear in Black Panther. While he will play the title role, Boseman will make his MCU debut in Captain America: Civil War alongside Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie, Daniel Brühl, Martin Freeman, Paul Rudd, and much more.

We still don’t know much about Captain Marvel other than that it is been written by Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Meg LeFauve (Inside Out).

Either Black Panther or Captain Marvel wouldn’t be DuVernay’s first venture in working on a superhero film. She did promotional services for Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2.
