Last month, I reviewed a comic that really hit home with me personally. You might remember it, it’s called The Tithe from Top Cow. (Here’s my review to refresh your memory.) Well, today I got to check out the second issue a couple of weeks early and it was just as phenomenal as the first.
Which brings me to the point at hand: We’ve been given the exclusive news to let the world know that this miniseries, The Tithe, is a mini no longer. Thanks to overwhelming interest and support, the publisher has given the go-ahead for the title to become an ongoing series. That means we are going to get more than just a single story that explores the hacker group Samaritan (I still think that would be a great title) and hopefully we will see a lot more from FBI Agents Campbell and Howard.
I especially enjoy the candid and spirited conversations between the two agents; Campbell is a devout Christian, whereas Howard is far more secular and cynical. These two may have their differences, but it’s part of what makes them so great together. When I asked writer Matt Hawkins about the differences, he was quite quick to point out the differences:
“There are the three points of view in the story. Dwayne is the believer. Samaritan is an agnostic and Jimmy is the atheist. I may introduce more characters in the second arc but these three will still be the main ones. Jimmy and Dwayne make a good team and they like working together.”
So I hope you’ll join me in wishing the creative team of The Tithe — Matt Hawkins, Rahsan Ekedal, Mike Spicer, and Troy Peteri (and all those other wonderful folks at Top Cow) — our best wishes as they dive into what can oftentimes be very controversial territory. Though it was nice to know that Hawkins says, “I haven’t had anyone be mean to me about it…” and that he “…made the book specifically so it would NOT be perceived as anti-religious….”
What does the next chapter hold for our characters? Well, let’s get through this current tale before we worry about that, okay? This current arc will continue monthly and be released in a trade graphic novel in August. The next story begins in September with Issue #5!
I did ask about upcoming plotlines and the length of stories, and Hawkins’ response was pretty straightforward.
“I’d like to do long runs on all of these, but given artist schedules there will be gaps eventually between arcs unless we go to multiple artists or rotating teams and I’m not a big fan of that.”
So it looks like we’ll keep the original crew in order to maintain continuity and consistency.
Be sure to pick up The Tithe #1 and be on the look out for this series, it will definitely make you think and maybe even question what’s right and what’s wrong! Ciao!
