The Flash season 1 finale is here! Has this been a fantastic season or what? Little did I know back in October at NYCC, when surprised with a sneak peek of episode 2, that this would end up being one of my favorite shows of the 2014-2015 television season. Who would have thought that the kid from Glee, would end up an awesome superhero? Not this girl! I was happily surprised as Barry Allen and his team (especially my fave, Cisco), continued to wow me every week with this really fun show. It’s gonna be a long summer without them.

Do not continue on if you have not watched the episode. Definite spoilers!

So where were we last week? Barry (Grant Gustin) reluctantly reached out to Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller) for help, when the particle accelerator went online, putting the trapped metas in danger. His team did try to warn him that he would regret it, and they were right, but Barry is desperate to stop Wells (Tom Cavanagh). Captain Cold brought along little sis, Golden Glider (Peyton List), and she and Cisco (Carlos Valdes) had adorable banter. Eddie (Rick Cosnett) was found and promptly ended things with Iris (Candice Patton), who wasn’t really that upset. Crossover deliciousness showed up in the forms of Oliver Queen and Firestorm (Stephen and Robbie Amell), who helped The Flash usher Wells into the now empty containment cell block. Oh yeah, Captain Cold predictably betrayed Barry and let all the other metas escape.

The Flash 1.23 “Fast Enough” review: Barry is in the midst of a giant dilemma. Does he go back and save his mom, possibly, no probably changing his life as he knows it? Joe (Jesse L. Martin) thinks he should. His dad is a firm no. Iris thinks he should do what he feels is right.

Wells: “What no Big Belly Burger? It’s one of the few perks of living in this time. We’re out of cows where I come from.” Love that reference to the deleted scene that answers the “what do metas eat” question.

Barry: “Why did you kill my mother?”
Wells: “Because I hate you. Not you now. You years from now.”

Wells really messes with Barry and then later, Cisco’s minds.

The big brains (Cisco, Stein, Ronnie, Caitlin, and Dr. Evil – as Cisco dubs him), concoct a wormhole plan. They will use the particle accelerator and then have Barry hit one hydrogen particle. At least that’s what I think they said. Barry has 1.52 minutes to save his mom and come back. As with all the science answers, this poses giant danger. Thawne will use the same wormhole to go home. Cisoc has to build a time machine, to his delight and ours. Thawne mentions Rip Hunter as the first nod to the new CW series, Legends of Tomorrow.

As with all finales, there are lovely “merging” moments, like when Dr. Stein officiates “our wedding” of Caitlin (Danielle Panabaker) and Ronnie. And when Iris and Eddie get back together. I should have known what his fate would be. Especially after Dr. Stein gives him that super pep talk about coincidence.

I literally jumped up at that incredible moment! Eddie kills himself to be Iris’s hero. And Eobard Thawne ceases to exist. That was a “holy shit” moment and a half.

The black hole begins and the 2nd nod to DC’s Legends of Tomorrow is shown, as it flashes from Captain Cold to future Hawkgirl (Ciara Renee). Barry runs. He runs up the side of a building and speeds through the tornado, attempting to counteract this hole that will swallow the world. And the screen goes black. What?!?!?!

To quote my husband, “It’s like Back To The Future meets Terminator. Like when I tried to explain to Brandon (our son), how John Connor is older than his own father.” Cue mind explosion.

For season 2, I hope they answer:

1- If Thawne doesn’t exist, is Nora Allen alive?

2- Are the real Dr. Wells and his wife alive now that Thawne didn’t kill them? Bring back Tom Cavanagh!

3- If Thawne doesn’t exist, can Eddie now live?

4- When time is changed now and again, will Cisco always remember? Will that eventually drive him insane?

5- Cisco’s a meta? What will he name himself?

6- The helmet!

Well done! I cannot WAIT for season 2!

  1. Regarding the meta-human name question, Cisco Ramon would be called “Vibe” if the show runners and CW follow the lead of DC Comics print publications ( the Justice League Detroit Era and the brief New 52 “Vibe” solo series) and the winged Hermes-like helmet is undoubtedly an Easter Egg reference to the original, Golden Age Flash (Jay Garrick of the Justice Society of America) and foreshadowing of the statements that Grant Gustin has made recently about the burgeoning second season prominence of parallel Earths and inter-dimensional adventuring

  2. Spoiler, but you left out the best part. Barry does go back in time to the night that his mother was murdered, but he DOESN’T save her. He uses the moment to say goodbye to his mom and then comes back to stop “Dr.. Wells” from going home. So very Barry Allenlike – doing the right thing, even when it pains him.
