So Seth Kushner emailed me a couple of weeks ago about his newest project called The Roman Nose, Book 1. An unusual title, I must say. So I followed the link and snagged a copy to read. It’s nothing like his SCHMUCK comic, a pseudo-bio about life in the Big Apple. I was expecting a similar style book but I couldn’t have been further from the truth.

Set in Rome in 2114, we find our “hero” enjoying the local scenery. I use the term hero quite loosely because, while he does have a power of sorts, it’s not one of those more conventional powers like flight or super strength. This guy has hyperosmia, also known as a heightened sense of smell. He gets downright Sherlockian in his deductions and uses it to stay one step ahead of trouble. There are some odd moments, obviously pointedly reminding us that this story is set in the future. There are some Dalek looking “Goombots” that are sent after him early on in the story. Luckily he is able to escape on his…Vespa? By breaking down a gate? The Vespa has gotten some serious upgrades in the future, let me tell you! Throw in mafia wives, ex-girlfriends, and evil popes to get one hell of a fun ride. There is a plot to overthrow the people in power and only our hero (known by the moniker The Roman Nose) is able to stop it!

I had a lot of fun reading this comic. It’s a little campy, but in a good way! The story from Seth Kushner is a myriad of pieces that have yet to come together, which is fine…I love a good plot. The protagonist is quirky and glib, always able to get a snarky comment in when under pressure. I’m not entirely happy with the art, since I know George Folz can create some really good work. My only guess here is that it was rendered in a simple style purposefully. Not to say it’s terrible, it just doesn’t have much depth and it seems very muted, color wise.

For two bucks, you can’t go wrong. It’s entertaining and you can seldom get that for the price of a taco, right? So jump over to the Comixology site and grab yourself a copy. You’ll laugh through much of it and the cliffhanger will get you wondering about the next issue! Independent comic creators need your support and this is a fine way to show it. Without the indies, we fall prey to whatever the others want to push out to us. Stand up and be counted! Buy independent!

NOTE: Seth had been battling Acute Myeloid Leukemia since April 2014 and though he had seemed to have triumphed against it, there were several other cancerous issues as a result of the treatments. Unfortunately, Seth was unable to defeat these residual diseases and lost his battle this past weekend. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family during this dark time. I didn’t know Seth all that well but what I did know was that he was a dedicated father and husband who lived his life to the fullest. Even when all seemed bleak last year, he would draw a picture every day for his son. So do me (and yourself) a favor and do something outside your comfort zone, do something fun. And when you do, think of Seth. I thank you for this, friends.
