Slayer Band Photo 2015

Well, we now know what the long-awaited new Slayer album is called and when it will be released.

The California metal giants will release their eleventh studio album entitled Repentless on September 11, 2015 via their own as yet unnamed imprint through Nuclear Blast Records. It will be the first album since the death of founding guitarist and major songwriting contributor Jeff Hanneman in 2013.

Now, I am a Slayer fan and have been since 1983, but I’ve got to tell you that I have a few issues with all of this: The last time that Slayer released an album on September 11th was God Hates Us All and the year was 2001… the day of the terrorist attacks. Seems like a date that you would REALLY want to avoid releasing another record on. And don’t even get me started on that title! Repentless? I guess it’s supposed to be a play on relentless and unrepentant? At any rate it sounds like it was dreamed up by someone who speaks English as second language. One of the worst titles in recent memory in my opinion.

At any rate, they are Slayer and I could probably forgive (or at least overlook) all of the above if the music was up to the very high standards that the band have set in the past. Sadly, based on the two advance tracks that we’ve gotten, this is not the case. The band debuted the lackluster track “Implode” live on Revolver’s Golden Gods Awards broadcast the very same day that Hanneman passed. Then after nearly two years of silence, they released “When the Stillness Comes” for Record Store Day this year. The latter track was guitarist Kerry King’s attempt at writing the sort of moody, creepy track that his late counterpart was famous for. Sadly despite King’s assertion that “It came out pretty good,” it did not. Both of these tracks have been rerecorded for the final version of Repentless, so I’m going to reserve full judgment until I hear the final product, but it’s not looking great.

But don’t take my word for it, check out the album announcement trailer here below as well as both of the advance tracks and let me know what you think in the comments below. And remember to check back right here at GoD for a full review of the album in September.
