Knight Rider, Vol. 1 isn’t like any other Knight Rider you’ve seen before, and I mean that in the best of ways. Knight Rider is one of the few “cult classic” 1980s television series that hasn’t been turned into a comic series. That is, until now. Was it worth the wait? Let’s find out…

There are two writers in this volume, Geoffrey Thorne wrote the bulk of this volume and Shannon Eric Denton wrote a smaller chunk. Thorne’s story is the origin, if you will, of this incarnation of Michael Knight and KITT, and it’s pretty far removed from anything we’ve seen in either the classic television series or any of the reincarnations of that series. Not only has it been updated for 2015, but Thorne doesn’t shackle himself to what has come before. What he tells is an exciting, action filled story that’s the beginning of what I hope is the first of many volumes. Denton’s story is a follow-up to Thorne’s, and it further cements this Knight Rider continuity and it’s really fantastic.

The artist for the bulk of this volume is Jason Johnson and he’s pretty epic. One thing that I hear from a lot of artist is how much they hate drawing cars. With Johnson, that’s not the case at all. If he did, there’s no way he could’ve made it through this. I can’t imagine how hard it is to convey cars in action, but Johnson pulls it off superbly. There’s some things that KITT does here that are flat out awesome, and it’s done without one weird looking or awkward panel. Beyond that, his ability to draw comic book pages without cars and other tech, is pretty great too. Then we get to artist Brian Denham, who illustrates Denton’s story. We know Denham’s art from a great many comic stories, and this one is just as great as the other stories that he’s done. How talented is this guy? He can draw KITT going camping and pull it off. I don’t really think I have to say anything else.

I could go on for hours and pages about how great this book is, but don’t worry, I won’t. Put all the preconceived notions that you have away and check this out!! You are NOT going to be sorry! If you need an extra push, look at the price. It’s just $15! Fifteen bucks for a 112-page full-size trade paperback? (It’s now $12 at Amazon.) You’re kidding me!! Buy it already!!
