Scarlett Couture #2 is more of the same, and that is awesomeness. Last issue we were introduced to Scarlett and her hybrid world of high fashion models, espionage, intrigue, gorgeous women, and all around cool spy stuff. This issue, the story really kicks into high gear and you better have your seatbelt buckled, because there’s lots of twists and turns!

Des Taylor‘s story for this issue is pretty great. It’s almost a stand alone issue that flows from last issue and flows into the next. There’s some great things that come with us from the first issue, but what impressed me, is that there’s things that DON’T. So, what you’re expecting is not what you’re going to get, and in this case, that’s a very good thing. It’s rare that writers introduce plot points and characters leave them to be picked up later. It’s a nice treat that leaves the reader satisfied, but also on their toes. This issue is heavy on detective and history solving (that’s not a misprint, I think I just made that term up) and action, there’s a lot of kidnapping, bad guys, action, and new characters being thrown at you, but it’s SOOO much fun!

Do I seriously need to talk about Des Taylor’s art? I mean, look at the header for this review and look down at the cover. That’s what you get in this comic. When is the last time a comics cover art matched what was inside? The ’80s? Besides the book being filled with beautiful women and awesome action, Taylor excels at a couple of things that comic artists need to get across to the audience. The first is backgrounds. There’s no scrimping here, no “white background” panels, nothing like that. Each and every panel has backgrounds that are just as fantastic as the focus of that panel. The other is facial expressions. What I love about Taylor’s work regarding this subject is that they’re not huge, overblown, gigantic reactions that a lot of artists render, they’re REAL expressions. A raised eyebrow, a narrowing of the eyes, that says more to me than a anything.

I know you liked the first issue, and you’re going to like this one as well. I’ve stated all the reasons above, but the bottom line is, is that this is a great comic book. If you’re the least bit interested in spies, action, covert ops then you’re going to love it. If you’re not, you’re still going to love it!
