Dwayne Johnson To Star In ‘Big Trouble In Little China’ Remake
  |  @   |

Dwayne Johnson has proven himself to be a viable movie star thanks in part to the $53 million weekend opening that his latest feature San Andreas posted. Now the actor is set to star and produce a remake of John Carpenter’s Big Trouble In Little China, which will be written by X-Men: First Class scribes Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz. More on this story below.

According to The Wrap, Johnson will play the role of Jack Burton, “an All-American trucker who gets dragged into a centuries-old mystical battle in San Francisco’s Chinatown.”

Johnson’s production company, 7 Bucks Entertainment, and his producing partners Dany and Hiram Garcia pitched the idea for a remake to Fox. Carpenter remakes have proven less than lucrative and can’t hold a candle to the original cult classics. Fox released the original Big Trouble In Little China, so they must have been impressed with the pitch that they were given.

The actor has shown that he has what it takes to lead a film on his own, and it should come as no surprise that he will take the lead once more. So it should be interesting to see what his approach is to Jack Burton and if fans of the original are willing to accept a contemporary version of the character.

There isn’t much more information that that as of this moment, so Fox hasn’t exactly scheduled a release date or targeted a start date. No word yet on who they are looking at for a supporting cast. The site also didn’t mention a possible shortlist of possible directors that the studio was looking at. So the remake is probably on the backburner for the moment.

The original 1986 starring Kurt Russell and Kim Cattrall pretty much had the same premise, with Russell playing Jack. Although the film only grossed $11 domestically, it is considered a cult favorite amongst avid film fans.

Johnson had a brief role in Furious 7 earlier this year. He also stars in HBO’s new original series Ballers, and will appear as Black Adam in the upcoming adaptation of Shazam, and will lend his voice to Disney’s upcoming animated film Moana.
