It has been eight years since Eli Roth, once hailed as one of the new visionaries of cinematic horror, made his last feature, the little-seen (and criminally underrated) Hostel: Part II. Since then he’s kept busy and stayed visible as an actor (Inglourious Basterds) and producer (The Last Exorcism). The Green Inferno, Roth’s grisly paean to the Italian cannibal flicks of the ’70s and ’80s, completed filming two years ago and was originally scheduled for a theatrical release last September. Unfortunately, financial issues with its production company resulted in an indefinite delay.
Now it appears as if Inferno may finally see a release in theaters across the U.S. courtesy of Blumhouse Productions, the company behind the successful Paranormal Activity and Insidious franchises, and Universal Pictures. According to Deadline, Blumhouse’s multi-platform distribution arm BH Tilt, which was launched last year, will release The Green Inferno on about 1,000 screens later this fall along with Universal and High Top Releasing.

Veteran producer and Blumhouse founder Jason Blum expressed his enthusiasm for the company’s latest acquisition in an official statement:
“When we launched BH Tilt we said our goal was to be part of the continuing evolution of distribution, whether it is through changing marketing strategies, changing revenue sources or changing windows. We are excited to capitalize on new developments in distribution and marketing to bring Eli’s movie to horror lovers across the country.”
Director Roth was equally excited about his long-awaited fourth film finally being released theatrically:
“The Green Inferno is a wild, fun ride that took us deeper into the Amazon than anyone has ever taken a film crew. BH Tilt is a forward thinking label that is helping to redefine how genre movies can be released. I want to express my deep gratitude to the fans for their incredible support of this movie and to everyone at Blumhouse and Universal for making sure fans can experience the film in theaters across the country.”
Roth filmed Inferno on location in New York City, Peru, and Chile in late 2012. Since its completion, the film has screened at multiple festivals and earned mixed reviews, mostly positive. It currently has a 63% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The Motion Picture Association of America has given it an R rating for “aberrant violence and torture, grisly disturbing images, brief graphic nudity, sexual content, language and some drug use,” so we shouldn’t a cinematic experience as extreme and horrific as the classic grindhouse gut-munchers that inspired it in the first place.
The Green Inferno will be released in the U.S. on September 25, 2015.
