Sony Zeroing In On New Director For ‘Spider-Man’

Sony is zeroing in on a director for their brand new Spider-Man reboot. When we last reported on the news, the studio’s shortlist consisted of Jonathan Levine (Warm Bodies, 50/50), Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre), Jason Moore (Pitch Perfect), Theodore Melfi (St. Vincent), and the team of John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein (the Vacation reboot). That was just a few weeks ago, and now it appears that two of the directors are now in the running to helm the film.

A new report says that Levine and Melfi now top Sony’s shortlist of directors. It also says that the studio may settle on a new name that hasn’t appeared on the original shortlist. More on the story below.

According to a report from Deadline, Levine, and Melfi are strong contenders after a long vetting process. The report also says that the team of Daley and Goldstein are also still being considered.

They add that commercials director Jon Watts is a brand new contender for the film as well. Watts made his directorial debut with the Kevin Bacon starring vehicle Cop Car, which made its debut at Sundance earlier this year.

With multiple reports that the shortlist of actors reporting on set to test screen for the role of Spider-Man, Sony announcing a director for the new Spider-Man is imminent, though it is unclear if the person chosen will also write the film. The studios are meeting with a team of writers, but it appears that they are open to the idea of the hired director also penning the script.

It has been confirmed that the film will focus on Peter Parker balancing his life as a high school student and being a superhero. Asa Butterfield (Ender’s Game, Hugo) and Tom Holland (The Impossible, In The Heart Of The Sea) are the rumored frontrunner for the title role, with Nat Wolff, Timothée Chalamet, and Liam James also being considered.

Producers Amy Pascal and Marvel’s Kevin Feige, with Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman will be the ones to make the final decision.

Spider-Man is expected to make his MCU debut in Captain America: Civil War, which opens in theaters on May 6, 2016. The new Spider-Man film has a theatrical release date of July 28, 2017.
