Akira is just that one project that refuses to die. Our last report on the project goes as far back as over three years ago now when Warner Brothers shut down production on the project with production budget and screenplay issues thought to be the cause. Since then it was presumed that Warner Bros. turned their attention to mapping out their DC Cinematic Universe.

But a new report says that the studio is still interested in bringing the adaptation to the big screen, and they have brought in new Daredevil showrunner Marco Ramirez (Sons of Anarchy) to write an adaptation for the long-gestating classic anime. More on the story below.

According to THR, Andrew Lazar (American Sniper) and Leonardo DiCaprio‘s production company Appian Way are still set to produce the adaptation. WB had acquired the rights to the film back in 2008, but it has suffered many production halts since that time. The closest Collet-Serra ever got to making it was back in 2012, when Garrett Hedlund, Kristen Stewart, Ken Watanabe and Helena Bonham Carter were all attached to star in the film.

In addition to Sons of Anarchy, Ramirez’s credits also include Orange Is the New Black and Da Vinci’s Demons. He has replaced Steven S. DeKnight as the showrunner for Netflix and Marvel’s Daredevil season 2. He will be working alongside Doug Petrie for the show’s second season.

Akira is the six volume manga series that was adapted into the popular anime movie which then became a cult classic. It’s unlikely if any of the actors reported are still attached to the film, and Ramirez is unlikely to direct the film due to his obligations to Daredevil.

This is one big step for the film, and hopefully Warner Brothers can find the right director to adapt Ramirez’s new script.
