C’mon”¦ the episode is called The Truth?! No way! No way are they going to reveal the secrets of Wayward Pines in only episode 5… right? Well, they kind of do. I have to admit it’s refreshing to have a show answer the questions you have, even if you might not like those answers. I fell in and out of love with LOST quickly, due to feeling like I was being strung along hopelessly. With M. Night Shyamalan attached to Wayward Pines as an executive producer and director, one could be skeptical that everything would be revealed in a huge shock-and-awe ending ala The 6th Sense.

I am not going to live up to an unfortunate nickname I earned watching movies with friends when I was younger, “The Ruiner,” so I will NOT reveal said truth here. Last week, realtor Peter McCall (Justin Kirk) threw himself into the electric fence surrounding the town, but not before pointing Ethan (Matt Dillon) to the mountains as the way out. With his family left to wait in Wayward Pines, Ethan ascended the mountain and we were left with the image of a humanoid monster with blood dripping from its mouth. As we pick up with Ethan, he is immediately attacked by said creature, and witnesses a mass eating of huge deer. The creatures he observes look somewhere between the vampires from The Strain and the cave dwelling monsters in The Descent.

Back in the Pines, Theresa (Shannyn Sossamon) is left to fill the “vacancy” left by Peter at the realtor. Except, unlike a normal realty agency, her job isn’t to sell homes, but rather give them away to the new strangers that enter the town. When Wayne Johnson wakes up after a bad accident, he tries to tell her of the scary images he remembered after waking up, but she quiets him down quickly and gives him his quiet private home.

Ben (Charlie Tahan) is enjoying school at Wayward Pines High, albeit skeptically. He wasn’t the most popular kid back in Seattle, and now he’s like Norm – everyone knows his name. He even has a girlfriend. His teacher, Megan Fisher (Hope Davis), is optimistic that he’ll make a fine addition to the school community. Ben and two other students are called to Mrs. Fisher for orientation. Orientation extends throughout the rest of the episode and does in fact explain the truth of Wayward Pines. Juxtaposed with this is Ethan’s finding the same truth thanks to the now not-so-mysterious Toby Jones.

Your enjoyment of this episode will completely depend of what you think of “the truth.” I wasn’t a huge fan of it, but I’m more than willing to go along for the ride and see where Wayward Pines takes me. The acting, the tension, and the supernatural bizarreness, are totally unique and awesome. Plus, we’d be foolish to accept that this episode’s “truth” will be the whole truth and nothing but. After all, this is television.

Wayward Pines Episode 5 “The Truth” debuts tonight at 9:00 pm ET on FOX.
