Marvel Studios and Sony At Odds Over ‘Spider-Man’ Casting

At first it looked like Asa Butterfield was going to get the role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man for the upcoming reboot. For the past couple of weeks, actors have been testing for the role since filming for Captain America: Civil War started last month, with many reporting that Butterfield was one of the major frontrunners. However, with no official confirmation from either Marvel or Sony, it looks like the casting process is a bit more problematic.

Now comes word that the Ender’s Game actor may not be under consideration anymore, and that Tom Holland (The Impossible), Charlie Plummer (Boardwalk Empire), and Matthew Lintz (Pixels) are the new frontrunners for Spider-Man. It also appears that Marvel Studios and Sony are unable to come to an agreement as to who could play the webslinger.

The Wrap reporter Jeff Sneider revealed on the Meet the Movie Press podcast that the shortlist has dwindled down to three actors — Holland, Plummer, and Lintz — with Marvel leaning towards Plummer, while Sony has their sights set on Holland. Lintz is also under consideration. Butterfield, however, seemed to be left out of the conversation, leading us to believe that he is no longer in the running. Fans were excited to hear that Spider-Man would being coming to the MCU when Sony and Marvel made an incredible and nearly impossible deal to share the character earlier this year. Remember Marvel won’t pay Sony anything to use the character in their cinematic universe, such as The Avengers movies or Captain America: Civil War, and neither Sony nor Marvel will take a cut of the other studios’ projects involving Spider-Man. What Marvel’s movies make, Marvel keeps, and vice versa. Given how important the character is to both parties and the future of their franchise, its not entirely surprising that these two would be at odds over casting.

Spider-Man is expected to make his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in Captain America: Civil War, which is why testing is being held there now. The role is expected to be a small, but significant one. While filming may still be going on, the two studios will eventually have to come to an agreement if they are to introduce Spider-Man to the MCU as they are hoping.

Producers Amy Pascal (Sony) and Kevin Feige (Marvel), with Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman, will be the ones to make the final decision.

Spider-Man is expected to make his MCU debut in Captain America: Civil War, which opens in theaters on May 6, 2016. The new Spider-Man film (rumored to be titled either Spider-Man: The New Avenger or The Spectacular Spider-Man) has a theatrical release date of July 28, 2017.

So who do you think should get the role or are the studios overlooking someone?

  1. Is there any evidence that there is any truth to this story? Sounds like click bait bulshit to me.
