‘Bates Motel’ Renewed For 2 Seasons, ‘The Returned’ Cancelled

A&E has renewed its prequel series, Bates Motel, not just for the upcoming season 4, but for season 5 as well. The series, created by Anthony Cipriano, Carlton Cuse, and Kerry Ehrin, focuses on the life of Norman Bates (Freddie Highmore) and his mother Norma (Vera Farmiga), before he turned into a Psycho.

Ehrin tweeted the news earlier today:

There is no series end date as of yet. Season 4 will air in 2016.

A&E GM Rob Sharenow said:

“The vision of our incredible creative team has exposed the steady breakdown of the relationship between Norman and Norma Bates,” said A&E & Lifetime EVP and GM Rob Sharenow. “We are thrilled to bring fans two more seasons to witness the next stages of Norman’s transformation into the most notorious psychopath in cinematic history.”

On a sad note, The Returned, will not be returning. Also created by Carlton Cuse, the show was an adaptation of the French series, Les Revenants. It followed Bates Motel and had a decent initial viewership, but that declined as the season went on. The new series, Damien, based on The Omen, is set to follow Bates Motel next season.

I am thrilled that I will get to see 2 more seasons of Farmiga (and all the cast), but The Returned was a good show, with enough mystery and the supernatural to keep us guessing. It had a great cast as well.

Bates Motel synopsis:

“Bates Motel,” inspired by Hitchcock’s genre-defining film, “Psycho,” is a contemporary exploration of the formative years of Norman Bates, relationship with his mother, Norma, and the world they inhabit. Viewers will have access to the dark, twisted backstory and learn first-hand how Norma helped forge the most famous serial killer of them all.
