‘Passengers’ Starring Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt A Go At Sony
  |  @   |

Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence have been attached to star in Passengers since early this year, but the film itself has been in development for quite some time. This film was written by Jon Spaiths (Prometheus) and will be helmed by Morten Tyldum (director of the Oscar-nominated film The Imitation Game).

Now after lengthy negotiations, Pratt and Lawrence have officially signed on to the film. But it won’t come cheap, as both of their contracts are in the eight figure range. The film won’t be cheap either as that will cost Sony up to $100 million plus. More on this story below.

According to The Wrap, Pratt’s contract jumped from $10 million to $12 million. Lawrence, who is no stranger to starring in blockbuster films, will get $20 million against 30 percent of the profit after the movie breaks even. Tyldum will be receiving a mid seven-figure deal. Sony declined to comment on any of the contracts.

THR adds Sony CEO Tim Rothman was hesitant to sign both actors onto the film, especially with the huge price tag, but given Jurassic World‘s resounding box office success the studio felt confident greenlighting the $120 million film. The studio was also under a lot of pressure because of the actor’s schedules, and that the earliest the film could shoot was September.

But with the huge star power that Pratt and Lawrence carry thanks to their blockbuster franchises, the $120 million production budget seems like an after thought for Rothman. Of course the budget for the film will most likely jump, especially since it isn’t accounting for the promotions. Rothman had attempted to get Tyldum to trim the budget to $90 million, but ultimately he failed to get the director to agree with him.

Passengers, which is described as Gravity with romance, is set in the distant future aboard a spacecraft, and follows a man (Pratt) who awakens early from a cryogenic slumber and spares himself from being lonely by waking up a slumbering female passenger (Lawrence).

The script came across the desk of multiple studios before it landed at Sony, and had stars like Reese Witherspoon, Rachel McAdams, and Keanu Reeves attached. At one point it was over at The Weinstein Company, where it would have cost them $35 million to make the film.

Neal Mortiz will produce alongside Michael Maher and Stephen Hamel.
