Marvel Studios’ Phase Two closing blockbuster Ant-Man recently screened for critics after undergoing a very painful and potentially troubling birth, and the reviews – blessedly – are mostly positive.

Several noted online film writers took to Twitter to voice their opinion of the film. Here are a few of the more enthusiastic ones.

Co-star Michael Pena was singled out for praise as a scene-stealer in several of the reviews. That’s no surprise; Pena has a serious penchant for walking away with huge chunks of a movie while barely breaking a sweat. Sometimes his performance can be the best part of a bad movie, other times he’s just one of the virtues of an otherwise solid flick. The latter appears to be the case here and kudos to Marvel for casting him.

Some of the reviews also mentioned the presence of a pair of post-credits sequences. This is not uncommon for a Marvel Studios film, but Collider’s Steven Weintraub calls the last one a “must-see” and Lussier refers to the two extra scenes as “each better than the last.” Since Paul Rudd’s miniature superhero is part of the cast of next year’s Captain America: Civil War, my money’s on one of those post-credits scenes being tied to the events of the next big event in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

I’ll admit to having my doubts about Ant-Man in the wake of original co-writer/director Edgar Wright‘s surprising departure from the project last year. But even though Wright’s vision for the film is pretty much lost to the ages, it’s safe to say that replacing him in the director’s chair with Peyton Reed and bringing in Adam McKay for a rewrite ensured that Marvel’s post-Age of Ultron “palette cleanser” would live up to the quality of their finest features.

Ant-Man stars Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, Evangeline Lilly, and Corey Stoll, and will open in theaters on July 17, 2015.
