The GoD List: Comics For July 1, 2015
  |  @   |

Each and every week, I, “Giant Robot!” Henchman 21 and “Space Robot!” Empress Eve read a lot of comics. Seriously you guys, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. I mean, it is possible”¦ theoretically. Naturally, we look forward to some more than others. I mean, who doesn’t? So, let’s take a look into the depths of our pull lists, grab some comics, and we’ll let YOU know what the top books to look forward to are for the week of July 1, 2015. Single issues and trades, they’re all here.

I thought I was going to have an easy list to write this week, but as I started seeing what was coming out, I had to keep adding things and adding things and adding things. It turned a shorter list into a longer list, but that just means you, the fine reader, have plenty to look forward to when you go to the store today. I hope you’re ready for some new series, some reprints, and plenty more on a jam-packed The GoD List!

Henchman 21

Onyx #1 (of 4) (IDW Publishing – $3.99)Onyx #1 from IDW is on my radar this week largely thanks to one of my favorite pencillers working today, Gabriel Rodriguez. Rodriguez’s art on Locke and Key was constantly amazing, and he took his layouts to a new level on the recent Little Nemo series. Now he brings his talents to a sweet sci-fi series with aliens, flying suits of armor, and the end of the world. As the series description says “From deepest space comes the cyborg warrior Onyx”¦ but has she come to Earth in its time of dire need to save it or to end it?” A sci-fi story isn’t something that I have seen Rodriguez work on before and I can’t wait to see how his expressive characters and detailed lines pull me into the story. The story is by Chris Ryall, who has written plenty of comics in the past, mostly for IDW (he is the Editor-in-Chief after all), but he’s hasn’t worked on much I was interested in before. I’m sure the story will be good, and the art will be fantastic, and that’s enough for me to buy Onyx.

We Stand on Guard #1 (Image Comics – $2.99) Okay, so from reading the description, We Stand on Guard #1 is basically the same plot as Red Dawn except the enemies are invading Canada. And the invaders are Americans. And it’s in the future. And there are giant robots. If you’re not a cartoonish cloud of dust running to the comic store at this point, I will also say that We Stand on Guard is written by one of if not the best writer in comic today, Brian K. Vaughan. Also, Vaughan is collaborating with Steve Skroce, who hasn’t done much comic work in the past decade, but has largely been working on storyboards for various Wachowski projects among others. They also have Matt Hollingsworth to add gorgeous colors to the book. And to top it off We Stand on Guard #1 has 40 pages of story for 3 bucks. Just buy it already.

Absolute Y The Last Man Vol. 1 (DC Comics – $125.00) How many of you will be buying Y The Last Man for the fourth time with the release of the Absolute edition? I’m not sure if Y is best in the Absolute format, as I never considered the art as all that dynamic. That’s not to say Pia Guerra’s art is bad, quite the opposite. Guerra’s cartooning is subtle but effective and works perfectly for the story, but it doesn’t have that “wow” factor that you normally see in a series getting the Absolute treatment. The story of Y The Last Man is still great, and the work as a whole is one of the best series of the last decade. I may just not appreciate it as much as others, and I’m not sure if it will be any better at a larger page size; however, if you love Y The Last Man, and I know there are plenty out there that do, this is pretty much a must-own.

Corto Maltese: Beyond the Windy Isles (IDW Publishing – $29.99) I’m not going to lie and say I’m the biggest fan of European comics, but I am willing to dip my toes into the waters, and that’s what I have done with Hugo Pratt’s classic Corto Maltese series. Corto Maltese: Beyond the Windy Isles is IDW’s 2nd of 12 volumes collecting the story of Corto Maltese, a dashing rogue who is at least partially the basis for many dashing rogues in modern fiction. Pratt’s style is a breath of fresh air to American eyes that aren’t used to it. If you’re looking for something different this week, and aren’t afraid of some classic black and white art, I highly recommend giving Corto Maltese a look.

Chew #50 (Image Comics – $3.50) All I can tell you about Chew #50 is that some crap is going to go down, some feathers are almost certainly going to fly, and something’s going to get eaten. Also, you can buy the second Chew Smorgasbord Edition, which collects issues 21-40 (and the first Secret Agent Poyo special) in a massive size, the better to enjoy all the Easter Eggs by artist Rob Guillory. Chew is the most imaginative, funny, exciting, and heart-breaking series being published today. I shouldn’t need to tell you to buy this.

Empress Eve

Barb Wire #1 (Dark Horse Comics – $3.99) Remember the 1996 movie Barb Wire starring Pamela Anderson Lee (yes, she was Mrs. Tommy Lee back then) as the title character? Well, Barb Wire #1 is not that! (Although, can you say guilty pleasure? I can.) Dark Horse Comics has relaunched the comic book series with creator Chris Warner on writing duty with art by Patrick Olliffe, Tom Nguyen, and Gabe Eltaeb. Barb owns a bar in Steel Harbor called The Hammerhead, but she’s also a skilled bounty hunter. Definitely check out this series and catch one of comics’ most badass heroines in action. Oh, and look at that cover by Adam Hughes here above – so awesome!!!!!!!
