Netflix has had great success with their original programming with series like Orange Is The New Black, House Of Cards, and Marvel’s Daredevil. We learned last year that the streaming service would be tackling Lemony Snicket‘s A Series of Unfortunate Events books.
Now, Netflix has released the first teaser for the upcoming series. Watch it here below.
If you’re familiar with the books — 13 of which were published from 1999 to 2006, then you’ll recognize some elements from them in this Season 1 teaser, which is perfectly set to the song “Missed Me” by the Dresden Dolls (Amanda Palmer on vocals).
The books tell the story of the three orphaned Baudelaire siblings, who are repeatedly subjected to “unfortunate” events after the death of their parents, as they go from one abusive/incompetent guardian to another. It’s a pretty morbid series as far as modern-day children’s stories go, but the books are well-written, captivating, and there’s always an element of learning for the reader (the author will use big words and then explain what they mean).
Paramount Television is producing the series along with Netflix, with author Daniel Handler (Snicket’s real name) serving as executive producer. Paramount Pictures adapted the first three books into the 2004 movie A Series of Unfortunate Events, which starred Jim Carrey, Meryl Streep, Jude Law, and Emily Browning. Plans for sequels were eventually scrapped.
