Joss Whedon in Avengers Age of Ultron

The only question I have is… why hasn’t Joss Whedon received every award that has ever existed in the history of awards? Saturday, he delivered his yearly sermon in Hall H (he skipped last year) AND won the Comic-Con Icon Award (the 9th of its kind). He likes to give his fans what they want – a chance to listen to him speak in that genius voice, and to ask questions about anything and everything, which he is only too happy to answer. But the most important question of the night was:

Who is his favorite character?

The answer is…

Buffy! Obviously. And yay!

On Twist, his 6-issue new comic series, it is the answer to the question:

“The most personal question that can be put to us, which is, why isn’t there a Victorian, female Batman? It’s a Victorian thriller about a meek chambermaid who is fed to a dark horror – but instead of dying, she returns, with knowledge, power, and rage she can neither deny nor control.”

Joss Whedon is a feminist and always has been. He also mentioned that this character would be similar to Dark Willow (gasp!).

On Firefly‘s possible return:

“We do not live in a perfect world – I know this because I do not have a flying car.” As to his plans, he just said, “You just put those nine people on a ship,” and anything could happen. “I don’t even need anybody else.”

Firefly returning exists in my perfect world, although I do not know how I feel about that world with no Wash (Alan Tudyk). I was more heartbroken than Zoe (Gina Torres).

Joss Whedon also mentioned Dr. Horrible 2, saying, “I’m unemployed, but nobody else is.”

The session ended with the presentation of the Icon Award, and Joss joined the likes of recipients George Lucas, Stan Lee, and Ray Bradbury. Joss was honored. But he deserves it. He is firmly entrenched in pop culture and geek culture history.

“Thanks guys, that almost makes up for having to listen to someone talk about how great I am. I like how artfully you’ve scratched off J.J. Abrams. I didn’t expect to be moved by this, but I am. I’m grateful. Thank you.”
