Bethesda’s ‘Fallout Shelter’ Made Over $5 Million In First Two Weeks

Bethesda won last month’s E3 game convention, according to most, holding their own showcase for the first time and unveiling games like the massively anticipated Fallout 4 and the new DOOM, among others.

One of the surprises that Bethesda delivered to fans during the showcase was that, in addition to Fallout 4, they also created their very own mobile game set in the same universe titled Fallout Shelter. On top of that, it was revealed that the game was actually already completed and would be available for download that very same night for free. Some Bethesda fans weren’t fond of the announcement, as mobile gaming has an overall bad reputation for the pay-to-win structure or overwhelming amount of ads found in many titles, but the developer assured fans that the game would have no ads and only optional purchases for items that could be earned in-game.

And apparently that’s all you need. According to mobile gaming data, Fallout Shelter made an astonishing $5.1 million in its first two weeks available to download.

The information comes from digital goods measurement website SuperData, who reports that the game surpassed King’s Candy Crush Saga—a game notorious for its pay walls and pay-to-win structure—on the iOS top-grossing charts. They also note the genius of Bethesda in finding a way to successfully deliver a game made for fans of a popular console/PC property who are generally against those types of games.

I can speak on this personally as huge Fallout fan who despises the way games like Candy Crush basically rob the naive and easily addicted blind…in broad daylight…while looking them in the eyes…with a large smile on their face. Mobile gaming is huge, and that doesn’t appear to be changing anytime soon. Hopefully in this achievement Bethesda has proven that you can make a game truly free-to-play while still making money for the business.

I’m very much enjoying my time playing Fallout Shelter here and there when there’s some down time, and I haven’t spent a single dollar on it. It is tempting from time to time considering the good stuff you get from the purchasable lunch boxes (as you can tell by the whole making over $5 million thing) but I like having to figure out how to keep my vault running and dwellers happy with only what I earn or discover.

Additionally, this same report says that ZeniMax Online Studios’ The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited, which is published by Bethesda Softworks, sold 138,000 digital copies after its release last month, helping it to rise to the top of the total units sold charts.

June was a darn good month for Bethesda. They still have another mobile game related to their Elder Scrolls franchise, The Elder Scrolls Legends, on the way as well. I’m sure they’re now even more excited for what’s sure to be a massive fall season when Fallout 4 is released for Xbox One, PS4, and PC on November 10th.
