‘Minecraft’ Movie To Be Directed By ‘It’s Always Sunny’s Rob McElhenney

Developer and publisher Mojang has officially announced It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia writer, director, and star Rob McElhenney as the director of the movie based on their massive hit video game Minecraft.

The unlikely pick was officially confirmed on the game’s site today. The film, which will be distributed by Warner Brothers, is based on Mojang’s ultra popular world building and defending game of the same name. More on the story below.

Here’s the official photo confirming the news:

Part of the game’s appeal is the freedom to create the world, with an extra added challenging feature which has the player defend their created world from creatures at night. There is also the option of exploring other worlds. The game is relatively easy to play, and has few rules, allowing the player to create a world in their image. Many fans have created unbelievably large buildings and locations and even plenty of recreations of geek favorites.

Shawn Levy (Night At the Museum, untitled Tinker Bell project) was actually attached to direct at one point in time. McElhenny’s involvement indicates that the film could be a comedy, but with the game’s defending aspect, there could also be a hint of action. It should be noted that The LEGO Movie producer Roy Lee is producing the film as well. This could mean that the film could have similar tones. But having McElhenny on board as director means that the film is that much closer to going into production, as full cast has yet to be announced.

Fans are surely exciting to hear that the film finally has a director, and you can expect the anticipation to grow as more announcements are made.
