Real Fake History: Little Mac From Nintendo’s ‘Punch Out’ (Video)
  |  @   |

This one hits home, and will for many others my age who grew up blowing into their Nintendo cartridges in order to become “Little Mac,” the hero of Punch Out and later Mike Tyson’s Punch Out. My parents wouldn’t let me keep the Nintendo in my house, so I spent hours in my grandparent’s house upstairs pounding the snot out of villains like Glass Joe, Von Kaiser, Great Tiger, and King Hippo. The folks at Machinima in the latest Real Fake History, now tell us the story of that wonderful young fighter in the green shorts and black tank-top, Little Mac.

Watch the episode below.

First we meet Jerome “Doc” Louis, Mac’s trainer who would give great advice like, “avoid his punch then counterpunch!” while furiously massaging his shoulder (if you pressed “select”). He explains that he purposely gave Mac easy fights against Joe and Kaiser to boost confidence; even paying an old Don Flamenco $50 to fight him, knowing he only had one punch (an uppercut). He goes on to laugh hysterically about buying pink jumpsuits two sizes too small for Mac to run across the NYC skyline in.

In somewhat bad taste, Mac is shown as a mentally slow adult, giggling, stuttering, and drooling. I guess the joke being that he was this tiny kid boxing giants. My favorite moment comes in the interview with “Soda” Popinsky who reveals he never got hit before, and no one had ever dodged his uppercut, and when Mac hit him in the face. “It hurt!” He was so ashamed by his loss, that he grew a huge beard to mask his shame.

For ’80s kids and fans of Nintendo, this video will at best make you laugh, but at the least provide tons of nostalgia. Machinima’s YouTube page has 12.5 million subscribers and features all sorts of videos on comic culture, movies, and entertainment. This is their 4th Real Fake History, with new one’s arriving every Tuesday.

Little Mac’s Rise To The Top – Real Fake History

Little Mac’s rise to champion of the Video Game Boxing Association had life-altering costs, and we’re not talking Amiibos.
