Swords of Sorrow: Red Sonja & Jungle Girl #1 is one of the satellite series from Dynamite Entertainment’s big summer crossover, Swords of Sorrow! It features, no surprise here, Red Sonja and Jungle Girl.
Marguerite Bennett manages to team up these two heroines in a totally believable, organic way, within the context of the series. Long story short, one magic portal and Sonja is whisked away from Mars, yes I said Mars, to the land of Jana, the Jungle Girl. When she gets there, she finds out that everything isn’t quite kosher in Jana’s neighborhood, and they set out to fix it. This is a really good start to what I’m feeling is going to be a really fun mini-series. The main characters are just different enough to have a great dynamic, and Bennett works some magic to make them play off each other in a sarcastic, but not annoying way. I think my only problem with the writing here is that there really isn’t much of a recap for new readers. Yes, chances are, if you’re getting this, you’re reading the Swords of Sorrow series, but there ARE going to be some readers picking this up because they just like Red Sonja or Jungle Girl. To those readers, this issue might be a little confusing.
Mirka Andolfo has the absolute perfect style for this book! Playful, fun, yet deadly serious. She does a fantastic job giving a very different looks to the first few pages that take place on Mars, and then switching things up when Sonja gets dumped in Jana’s land. She also choreographs a fantastic fight between Sonja and Jana, fast paced action, but nothing gets lost in the shuffle with the way she lays out the pages. All around, great artwork in this book.
As I said before, pretty great start to what I’m sure is going to be a very fun series. It would’ve been a little better if there was a couple of paragraphs recapping what had gone on before for readers coming in fresh to that event, but I think those readers will be able to pick up on it before too long. I would definitely recommend this book!
