YES! This is what I want from an episodic horror series! After a disappointing third episode, which felt like a bad episode of the OC, MTV’s Scream hit all the right buttons this week. The show encapsulated everything you’d expect from something called Scream. And in an odd twist, the acting wasn’t bad either!

Last week’s victim was Riley (Brianne Tju), who was left for dead on the police precinct roof. With a victim in plain sight in public, we ditch the subtleties and dive right into the “aftermath.” The cops try to say that the killer is dead, as suspect Tyler’s car fled the scene and crashed leaving his headless remains. Even sex-kitten bitch Brooke (Carlson Young) is broken up about Riley. This sounds horrible, but I liked Riley’s death. She was a kinda nice, geeky, girl on a show filled with stereotypical female characters. She certainly gave a vibe of a character who’d be around longer. With her gone, Noah (John Karna) is now mourning buddies with Audrey (Bex Taylor-Klaus) as both their significant others were murdered. They have an awesome back and forth discussing their mutual sadness:

Noah: “I’d rather channel my sadness into something productive, maybe vigilante justice”

Audrey: “We could team up “˜Bi-Curious and the Virgin'”

Noah: “That’s the world’s saddest crime fighting duo.”

It almost reminded me of my favorite teenage film in recent years, Perks of Being a Wallflower.

We don’t wait too long for the mystery to start again. Emma (Willa Fitzgerald) receives a package containing a yearbook from the year Lakewood’s infamous massacre happened. Pictures are missing, and Emma’s dad face is scribbled out with a message “The truth lies where the mask was made.”

Kudos to the abandoned hospital that “closed down 6 months ago!” I loved this part, and felt it was the best executed segment in the entire series thus far. It was a pure horror scene. Huge, dark, abandoned building, trails of blood, shots through a camcorder, noises from down the hall, falling heads! Sure, some of it is cliche, but I always say that sometimes cliches are cliches because they work.

There are still some minor annoyances. There is a side plot dealing with Will and Jake (Connor Weil and Tom Maden) being part of a blackmailing scheme. They’re obviously trying to make them suspects to the audience, but it’s dreadfully obvious they’re being lined up for the slaughter. The podcaster, Piper Shay (Amelia Rose Blaire), doesn’t contribute much, and it feels like she’s only there because someone felt they “needed” a Courtney Cox character. Aside from the quibbles, I really liked this episode. It was fast paced, actually had some tense and creepy moments in the hospital, and I’m digging the whole Brandon James angle. The weird deformed kid who becomes a killer is very Jason-ish, but works best here as the backdrop to this round of killings. I’d like to see more of the killer toying with the victims instead of silently pursuing them, but we’re only 4 episodes in. This was exactly the rebound show the series needed, and I’m excited to see where we go from here.

On a totally separate and random note, I don’t watch any other MTV shows, but during Scream, MTV sticks ads for other MTV shows in an almost subliminal messaging way, seen transparently through the screen. It’s really annoying and distracting, and for two weeks I thought I was hallucinating.

Scream returns with a new episode next Tuesday night at 10:00 pm ET on MTV.
