Honest Trailer – ‘Mission(s): Impossible’
  |  @   |

As is the new normal over at Screen Junkies, they take their Honest Trailer from the upcoming movies of the week. So as Tom Cruise looks to hit the restart button on another one – Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation, it’s time for an Honest Trailer so big… it covers the first four movies of the series! Mission: Possible. Yeah sorry, that was an obvious one.

Watch the Honest Trailer below.

It’s funny to think that the Mission: Impossible franchise is… are you ready? 20 years old!!! It was May of 1996 when Cruise first suited up as Ethan Hunt, and it’s interesting to note that this may be one of the only franchises where the sequels are always highly regarded, and the original has almost totally faded from public consciousness. I guess only The Fast and the Furious can boast that sort of franchise improvement. Narrator Jon Bailey sets the time period, “In a time where Hollywood was rebooting all your dad’s favorite TV shows as movies, get ready for the only one that actually worked!” The others shown in the opening montage are hilariously awful films like Lost in Space, The Beverly Hillbillies, and The Mod Squad. Ugh, just ugh.

Bailey has fun blending all 4 previous films, as they all share equally vague plots, filled with all the same generic spy cliches like: double agents, fancy gadgets, double crosses, and Scooby Doo masks. He also points out how each director has added their own style to their installment. Brian DePalma’s “psycho-drama,” J.J. Abrams shaky cam, Brad Bird’s cartoon sensibility, and… well his slaying of John Woo’s action style is actually really dead on hilarious, and I won’t spoil it here. Let’s just say MI2 reminded me a lot of Face/Off.

The best part of this is the description of each film’s cast of revolving characters like “Lap-top Guy,” “Guy with a foreign accent,” and “Sexual Objec Girl.” Only to end it by showing the one cast member aside from Cruise who keeps sticking around – Ving Rhames. And since this is an odd number installment that means we get short haired Tom, as the long hair will likely return for part 6, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Protocol: Ghost Nation… or something that sounds cool like that. The amazing thing watching this video is how Tom Cruise doesn’t look like he aged AT ALL since the first one, and he is now 53(!), and still does most of his own stunt work. Scientology or not, that guy gets some major kudos. Must be all the running he does in these movies.

Screen Junkies has over 4 million subscribers on YouTube and releases new Honest Trailer videos every Tuesday. Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation hits theaters everywhere Friday, July 31st. The previous four films in the franchise have grossed over $1 Billion when adjusted for inflation. When not, it’s still a hefty $739+ million. The “honest” truth? Tom Cruise is box office.
