Tom Cruise Says ‘Mission: Impossible 6’ Shoots Next Summer; ‘Edge Of Tomorrow 2’ Possible

The newest installment of the Mission: Impossible franchise Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation opens in theaters this weekend, and as always talks of a sequel have already made the press rounds. Tom Cruise is currently on whirlwind tour to promote the film, which is getting rave reviews. While the franchise doesn’t adhere to filming sequels like Marvel does, production on the sequel may start sooner than later. According to Cruise, the film could start production as early as next year.

Cruise is also talking about the possibility of an Edge of Tomorrow 2, and has apparently pitched an idea to director Doug Liman and screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie. More on the story below.

In an interview with MTV, Cruise reveals that he talked to Liman about the possibility of a sequel, but seeing as it’s still too early to confirm the news, he wouldn’t reveal details about it:

“I pitched it to McQuarrie and Doug. We were there one night and I was like, I’ve got an idea for it.”

He added that they would need to get Emily Blunt back, otherwise what is the point:

“It could be so much fun. Gotta get Emily. I was like Emily, please. She was like, ‘give me another year, please.'”

Edge of Tomorrow was very well received by critics, with some saying that Cruise still had the ability to draw in an audience. It did however perform below Warner Bros.’ box office expectations, which meant that any hopes of a sequel would remain in limbo. Still there is a fanbase, and Cruise is expressing great interest in returning to a world that still has plenty left to explore. There is nothing to tell us that WB shares Cruise’s interest, if anything they will probably look at how Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation fares at the box office, to see if he still can hold on to a franchise.

Speaking of Mission: Impossible and box office expectations, Cruise is on the Rogue Nation press tour, and told The Daily Show‘s Jon Stewart about Mission: Impossible 6:

“We’re starting to work on it now. We’ll probably start shooting it next summer.”

Now that could be Cruise just pandering to the audience. But these days, it’s box office numbers that determine the future of a franchise. But as aforementioned, the film is already getting rave reviews — in fact it is already one of my favorite films of the summer — a Mission: Impossible 6 may not be a question of if it will get made, but when will it get made.
